Niyi Osundare (born 1947 in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria) is a prolific poet, dramatist and literary critic. He gained degrees at the University of Ibadan (BA), the University of Leeds (MA) and York University, Canada (PhD, 1979)

Previously professor (from 1989) and Head of English (1993–97) at the University of Ibadan, he became professor of English at the University of New Orleans in 1997. Osundare has a wife, Kemi, and three children, two girls and a son who still lives in Nigeria.

African Writers Series (AWS) is a series of books by African writers that has been published by Heinemann since 1962. Other published volumes of poetry include Songs of the Season (1987), Moonsongs (1988), Waiting Laughters (1990), Selected Poems (1992), Midlife (1993), The Word is an Egg (2000) and Tender Moments (2006).

Niyi Osundare, a prolific Nigerian writer, poet, essayist, playwright and social critic wrote The Politician’s Two Mouths against the backdrop of the prevailing political climate in Nigeria during the Shehu Shagari-led Second Republic overthrown by the Buhari-Idiagbon junta on December 31, 1983.
