Most of the citations cited in the text ARE NOT in the reference section or anywhere else in the book???????? What's up with that??? Did I miss something??? Is the kindle version different than the print version that contains all the references???? It might be but I'm not going to buy the print version to find out. The kindle version is a 2nd revised edition of the original text. Maybe the kindle version has the old reference bibliography??? On the first 10 pages alone 2/3's of all citations are not in the reference section. This is very very annoying. Why would an editor do this? Why would an author allow this? This is sloppy scholarship or pure laziness or both. So, then, if you are unfamiliar with a cited author you have to go out on the web to find out the book, article, etc. What a shame. For a book that bills itself as the "only comprehensive textbook on ancient sexuality" of Greaco-Roman descent, that is a travesty. I will read it. I will follow the citations, as I do for all such books; but what a pain - an annoying read, not for overall content but for lack of careful attention to important detail demonstrating lack of general respect for the reader. Again, did I miss something here??? I am quite willing to be corrected.

And that's why you shouldn't buy a Kindle. Buy a real book if you want the whole book, silly.

This is a well written and engaging book. Perhaps the best feature of the text is the author's great dexterity in stating and synthesizing the scholarship of others as well as formulating her own theories and speculations. Her accessibility and erudition are noteworthy. The one criticism of the text is that more than half of it deals with Greek culture and almost out of obligation continues into the Roman era, but is less successful in its depth and interest.

The great work of such scholars is showing the depth of complexity in the ancient world about which we assume to completely comprehend, simply because we have inherited much of their culture. The book also helps put aside all the contemporary doctrinaire notions as regards gender and sexuality which are often the political starting points in contemporary culture. Read and learn from an excellent scholar!
