Elizabeth Gaskell’s short story the old nurse’s tale is set in 1852 and is based on revenge. The story has a moral that makes the reader think about the consequences of their actions and is set in an old manor house. The story keeps the reader wanting to know more and is excellently written, the perfect ghost story. Rosamond’s nanny (nurse Hester) tells the story. Therefore it is written in the first person

When a lot of people think of literature in general, what comes to mind is the traditional English novel. Jane Austen, Charlotte and Emily Brontë, Charles Dickens- these are, anecdotally, the instinctive figures of literature for most people. Interestingly, Gaskell is most well-known for her social realist novels like North and South, which carries over into these, as Penguin has chosen to title it, Gothic Tales (this is the second collection I’ve read with that exact title, the first being by the Marquis de Sade, and I have to wonder by the end of my life just how many. sets of Gothic Tales will I read?).

Not quite a ghost story, more the ghosts of the past. A nurse recounts the tragic history of her first charge's family, and the losses they experienced because of lust and pride. The past comes back to surround the new child in the house, forcing the family to confront their sins.

I found it interesting that it wasn't really, as I said, a ghost story. Half of the participants of the apparition are alive to view the events ebing repeated, suggesting more a psychic scar upon their household. The drama of the event itself is also interesting, and probably could have worked well as a story in their own right, without any haunting added.

This story is in the public domain. I listened to the audio production from Librivox's sixth ghost collection.
