Middleton was very preoccupied with sexual themes, especially in his tragedies, "The Changeling" (1622), written with William Rowley, and "Women Beware Women" (1621). The portraits of women in these plays are remarkable. Dekker was a popular, prolific writer who had a hand in at least 40 plays, which he wrote for Philip Henslowe, the theatrical entrepreneur. In the plays that seem to be completely by Dekker, he shows himself as a realist of London life, but even his most realistic plays have a strong undertone of romantic themes and aspirations.

Thomas Dekker was a playwright, pamphleteer and poet who, perhaps, deserves greater recognition than he has so far gained. Despite the fact only perhaps twenty of his plays were published, and fewer still survive, he was far more prolific than that. Born around 1572 his peak years were the mid 1590’s to the 1620’s – seven of which he spent in a debtor’s prison. His works span the late Elizabethan and Caroline eras and his numerous collaborations with Ford, Middleton, Webster and Jonson say much about his work.

"The Roaring Girl" is a fun and fantastic drama. The main character Moll is both strong and cunning, but she helps young lovers in the quest to marry. Based off of the real Mary Frith, Dekker and Middleton take liberties with the character, but I feel that they do her justice as well. I will read it again, as well as write my Masters Thesis on it.

The annotations in this text are really good and the academic articles included after the play are insightful.

One big early modern sex joke. Let's be honest, Shakespeare does it better. Save your money. Or buy "The Revenger's Tragedy" instead.
