The author states in the Preface and Acknowledgements to this 2006 book, "Most of the essays here were written during the 1990s, when there was frequent talk of a need for a national conversation about race. But I have not intended these essays to help satisfy some such need. Americans, after all have never NOT conversed about race. And their public cultures have rarely wanted for talk, debate, and politically inflected representations of race.
