A Footnote to History: Eight Years of Trouble in Samoa is an 1892 historical non-fiction work by Robert Louis Stevenson describing the contemporary Samoan Civil War. Robert Louis Stevenson arrived in Samoa in 1889 and built a house at Vailima. He quickly became passionately interested, and involved, in the attendant political machinations.

A Footnote to History book. Not only is this a fine analysis of ury colonialism, it is also a rollicking good yarn in the best Stevenson tradition.

Robert Louis Stevenson was born in 1850 in Edinburgh, the son of an engineer. In 1888, he left England for his health, and never returned, eventually settling in Samoa after travelling in the Pacific islands. He briefly studied engineering, then law, and contributed to university magazines while a student.

To us, with our feudal ideas, Samoa has the first appearance of a land of despotism. An elaborate courtliness marks the race alone among Polynesians; terms of ceremony fly thick as oaths on board a ship; commoners my-lord each other when they meet - and urchins as they play marbles. And for the real noble a whole private dialect is set apart.

The book covers the period 1882 to 1892 and even-handedly analyses the elements of discord, both native and foreign, before pitching in to current events. Stevenson arrived in Samoa in 1889, and his on the spot involvement gives the narrative the immediacy of front-line journalism, which is precisely what it is. The events of more than a century ago come alive again from the very first sentence: The story I have to tell is still going on as I write it is a piece of contemporary history in the most exact sense.

Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish novelist and travel writer, most noted for Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and A Child's Garden of Verses. The book served as such a stinging protest against existing conditions that it resulted in the recall of two officials, and Stevenson for a time feared that it would result in his own deportation.

Novelist, poet, and essayist Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. A sickly child, Stevenson was an invalid for part of his childhood and remained in ill health throughout his life. He began studying engineering at Edinburgh University but soon switched to law. His true inclination, however, was for writing. Although Stevenson's novels are perhaps more accomplished, his short stories are also vivid and memorable. All show his power of invention, his command of the macabre and the eerie, and the psychological depth of his characterization.

The smallness of the scale, and the singularity of the manners and events and many of the characters, considered, it is hoped that, in spite of its outlandish subject, the sketch may find readers.
