Jack C. Richards, Thomas S. The book begins with a conceptual framework for professional development.

This much-needed text provides a coherent and strategic approach to teacher development Teacher Development for Language Teachers examines ten different approaches for facilitating professional development in language teaching: self-monitoring, support groups, journal writing, classroom observation, teaching portfolios, analysis of critical incidents, case analysis, peer coaching, team teaching, and action research. The introductory chapter provides a conceptual framework. All chapters contain practical examples and reflection questions to help readers apply the approach in their own teaching context.

The proof is in the pudding; I went to a TESOL conference once, whose theme was Professional Development for Language Teachers, in the country where I live and work. This book, Professional Development for Language Teachers, was quite prominently used by some of the presenters there as the content for their presentations. I remarked to a friend of mine at that time, that it would have been possible to have stayed home and read this book in lieu of actually going to that conference.

The only downside of this book is that it was written in the 90's thus it isn't really up-to-date as to how language teachers today go about professional development with the rapid development and expansion of the Internet since publication, but that is a very minor flaw. Professional Development for Language Teachers is still very poignant and relevant for language teachers today as it is very insightful. This book is a real gem for language teachers, because it offers numerous, time tested suggestions for language teachers of all levels who are interested in Professional Development.

As a language teacher and administrator, I appreciated this overview of various professional development options targeted to our specific field. The chapters are:
1. The nature of teacher education
2. Workshops
3. Self-monitoring
4. Teacher support groups
5. Keeping a teaching journal
6. Peer observation
7. Teaching portfolios
8. Analyzing critical incidents
9. Case analysis
10. Peer coaching
11. Team teaching
12. Action research

Each chapter included a discussion of the intended benefits of each option and suggestions for successful implementation. Throughout, there were also "Reflection" questions and "Vignettes" from contributors around the world, which broke up the text but didn't add much value to the book in my opinion.

Well laid out and easy to understand. The subjects it touches on are interesting and the writing is thought provoking. Would not have bought it if not for a class, but very good to use in an education capstone.

The author analyses important teacher development issues in a simple and logical way. A useful book for all teachers, and specifically, for those who want to develop professionally but do not know how to start! The book provides sample answers of teachers who did, for example, self-observation, compiled a teaching portfolio or discussed problems in a research seminar or a workshop.
