A concise biography of General Charles de Gaulle, a WWII leader, the architect of France's resilient Fifth Republic and a leading statesman of the 20th century. The author, Harvard University's Charles Cogan, builds on the work of other de-Gaulle's scholars such as Stanley Hoffman and Jean Lacouture. Dr. Cogan characterizes Gaullism through de Gaulle thoughts, action and progressing vision. He shows how de Gaulle thinking evolved while "maintaining a certain consistency and continuity" forming "a strategic ensemble... not always readily discernible".

The book is rich in details connecting the dots between de Gaulle and his generals (Marie-Pierre König, Philippe Leclerc, Jean de Lattre de Tassigny), key European strategists like Jean Monet, as well as insights into the complex relationship between de Gaulle and leaders including Roosevelt, Churchill, Eisenhower, Adenauer and Kennedy.

I also found precious contextual gems in the collection of documents in the second part of the book.

A very brief, "just the facts" overview of Charles De Gaulle's life. In actuality, it is a little over 100 pages, with the rest of the book consisting of some basic documents that the author used. Most readers will simply want to skip over this latter section. If you want a basic description of the life of one of the 20th century's most important European leaders, it is recommended. If you want a fuller treatment complete with analysis, look elsewhere.
