Hagar1998 by Janet Shafner. The painting of Hagar, the daughter of Pharaoh and the second wife of Abraham, shows her in a deeply shadowed desert landscape, turned, so she cannot see the imminent death from thirst, of her son, Ishmael. As narrated in Genesis, Ishmael and Hagar have been sent out of Abraham's house into the wilderness, but as Ishmael lay dying, an angel appears to save him and to tell Hagar that he will become a great nation. The lunette shows two houses - one of Ishmael, the progenitor of the Arab nations, and the other of Isaac, the ancestor of the Jews.
Citing biblical material, as well as later Jewish and Christian writings . This book is a collection of good efforts to theorize the mystery of manna. This book is a gate to new understanding of ancient rituals, and can elaborate same ritual nowadays among many tribes and cultures.
Citing biblical material, as well as later Jewish and Christian writings, Merkur reveals the existence of an unbroken tradition of Western psychedelic sacraments, from Moses and manna to Jesus and the Eucharist. Most important, Merkur shows that this was not a heretical tradition, but instead part of a normal, Bible-based spirituality, a continuation of the ancient tradition of visionary mysticism. A little complex, but still good book.

New London - Janet Shafner, an artist and teacher in southeastern Connecticut, died of lung cancer on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011. She did not wear feminism on her sleeve, but insisted that women's rights and dignity should not be denied. From her, our local Jewish community learned that the secular and religious worlds can, and ought to be, harmonized. Though she was a multi-tasking working mother, she made time for all of her family.
In this book, the contemporary American artist Janet Shafner, interprets events in the dramatic lives of our biblical foremothers and forefathers in a series of powerful oil paintings. She writes: "Everything that touches us deeply today has a parallel occurrence in the Bible - family jealousy, sexual obsession, enduring love and sacrifice, murder, rape, incest, mans inhumanity to his fellow, even ethnic cleansing - it is all there".
For all readers seeking to explore the deeper levels of meaning in these ancient texts through the unique medium of painting and the textual explication of Midrash, this book is a fascinating journey. We discover the real reason that Lots wife turned into a pillar of salt, the story of the unnamed sister/brides of Cain and Abel, a fatal error of judgement that led to centuries of evil for the Jewish people, the convert whose daring made possible the royal family of Israel and the future Messiah. These and many other fascinating mysteries are revealed in a series of vivid, multi-paneled, shaped canvases.
The 36 paintings illustrated in this book will be exhibited at The Lyman Allyn Art Museum in New London, Connecticut from January 7 to June 8, 2003.
