Patients in whom epilepsy was diagnosed and the first antiepileptic drug prescribed between July . Epilepsy - Genetic Alliance. Epilepsy - MedlinePlus Health Information.

Patients in whom epilepsy was diagnosed and the first antiepileptic drug prescribed between July 1, 1982, and April 1, 2006, were followed up until March 31, 2008. Outcomes were categorized into 4 patterns: (A) early and sustained seizure freedom; (B) delayed but sustained seizure freedom; (C) fluctuation between periods of seizure freedom and relapse; and (D) seizure freedom never attained. Cumulative probability of being seizure-free by time from start of treatment and number of antiepileptic drug regimens tried.

Specific topics covered include synaptic transmission and its relation to epilepsy, seizure types and epileptic syndromes in children, EEG in epilepsy, neuroimaging in epilepsy, differential diagnosis of epilepsy, monitoring drug treatment, side effects, and comprehensive epilepsy service.

A possible relationship between epilepsy and violence has been debated for over a century. The debate has taken on new importance because of the increasing use of the "epilepsy defense" in criminal cases.

Despite the significant progress made in epileptology, resistant epilepsies constitute approximately 30 % of all forms of epilepsy. An overview of recent literature is provided on the efficacy and safety of a new antiepileptic drug zonisamide (Zonegran) in the treatment of epilepsy with emphasis on monotherapy. We present three patients with classic clinical and electrographic features of juvenile myoclonic epilepsy that were maintained on lacosamide (one on monotherapy and two as adjuvant therapy).
