Evidence shows that the effect of shift work on sleep mainly concerns acute sleep loss in connection with night shifts and early morning shifts.

Shift and night work are a well recognized risk factors for health and well-being, but the outcomes are not always in agreement and sometimes contradictory, due to both different working and living conditions of the groups examined, and to different approaches and methods used.

Shift work comprises work schedules that extend beyond the typical .

Shift work comprises work schedules that extend beyond the typical "nine-to-five" workday, wherein schedules often comprise early work start, compressed work weeks with 12-hour shifts, and night work. According to recent American and European surveys, between 15 and 30% of adult workers are engaged in some type of shift work, with 19% of the European population reportedly working at least 2 hours between 22:00 and 05:00. Sleepiness usually occurs during night shifts and is maximal at the end of the night.

However, while shift work does create potential productivity advantages, it also has many inherent risks. Some of the most serious and persistent problems shift workers face are frequent sleep disturbance and associated excessive sleepiness. Sleepiness/fatigue in the work place can lead to poor concentration, absenteeism, accidents, errors, injuries, and fatalities. The issue becomes more alarming when you consider that shift workers are often employed in the most dangerous of jobs, such as firefighting, emergency medical services, law enforcement and security.

Insomnia can be the difficulty to fall asleep or to wake up before the individual has slept enough. The excessive sleepiness appears when the individual has to be productive, awake and alert. Both symptoms are predominant in SWSD.

As world competitiveness sharpens, more industries are using shiftwork. This set of short pages from the most recent international symposium on shiftwork brings together review papers on a number of the world's leading shiftwork researchers. Health problems must concern both shiftworkers and their managers, and a series of papers report new findings on coronary risk factors and cardiovascular diseases, general health complaints, sleep and the effect of poor sleep in performance. Should women work night shifts? There is a series of contributions on women and nightwork, a topic that has grown into controversy in a number of countries in recent years. Recent research has highlighted the role of bright light in influencing human adaptability to unusual working hours, and some recent work on this is reported. There are also many contributions covering other topics concerned with shiftwork such as the adoption of condensed working hours and the standardization of questionnaires used in epidemiological studies.
