This is a great reference for the behavior professional. Very thorough. It loses one star for too many personal opinions/beliefs being stated in what should be a book based solely on fact. Being able to separate belief from science, this is my go-to when researching various types of behavior issues.

I am a professional dog trainer, and I have an entire library of dog behavior and training books, most of which are geared towards professional dog trainers and behavior consultants. This is definitely one of the most useful books I’ve found. It contains a wealth of great information, and the extensive section of handouts and protocols is an excellent resource.

Very comprehensive, thorough reference with lots of supplemental materials. Considered one of the major references in small animal (dog and cat) behavior. Dense reading, not for some laypeople but indispensable for those dealing with small animal behavior professionally.

A more accessible, shorter reference for those without the academic background is "Decoding Your Dog" by the ACVB. I own both.

Karen Overall's book is a must have for any dog (or cat) trainer. The writing is clear and concise, which can be a challenge when explaining complicated jargon.
