The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Psychopharmacology is now updated to keep you current with the latest research and trends in the field. Covering both basic science and clinical practice, this new edition draws on the talents of 53 new contributors to guarantee fresh, authoritative perspectives on advances in psychiatric drug therapy. Introductory chapters provide a theoretical grounding in clinical applications and include a new chapter on genomics and genetics. The Classes of Psychiatric Treatment section is a virtual pharmacopoeia, with chapters devoted to specific agents. It presents information by class of drug; includes data on indications, side effects, and interactions for each; and features expanded coverage of newly approved agents. Chapters in the Clinical Psychobiology and Psychiatric Syndromes section review the neurological underpinnings of specific disorders and include a new chapter on the neurobiology of childhood disorders. Subsequent coverage of psychopharmacological treatment encompasses state-of-the-art approaches to psychiatric disorders; specific patient populations; difficult-to-manage conditions, including a new chapter on treatment of chronic pain syndromes; and specific guidance on drug selection and prescription. A concluding new chapter reviews ethical considerations in psychopharmacological treatment and research.

Do not buy this. I am sorry I did. To me, it is worse than useless, because it contains only half the information contained in the previous (4th) edition. As a result, if I have a patient care quandary and need detailed information, I need to rely on the previous edition. Then, I need to try to find what little has been added and updated in this edition. By abridging a good reference text, this continues a terrible tradition of recent American Psychiatric Association publishing, whereby the most recent editions of its Textbook of Psychiatry (Hales et al) and Textbook of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (Dulcan) have all been severely abridged. What were decent reference texts have become survey or review texts - without being identified as such. These texts may be useful for medical students or prospective examinees wanting a review, but they are NOT suitable for practicing psychiatrists. One hopes that the American Psychiatric Association is not intentionally trying to dumb down the practice of psychiatry, but that seems to be an inevitable consequence of what is not just an APA mistake but their ongoing policy and practice. I would throw all of those texts away - except that I hate to destroy books - and paid good money for them.

Note also: the fourth edition included online access. There seems to be none with this edition.

Don’t waste your money. Since the publication of DSM-5, the APA has published updated versions of several textbooks. I have purchased 3. The textbook of psychiatry, textbook of psychopharmacology and the textbook of neuropsychiatry and clinical neuroscience. I have previous editions of all 3. All 3 of the newer editions have been cut down in size and scope, between 39 to 60%. They are more appropriately described as primers, books for beginners. Another way to put is to say they have been “dumbed down”. They are no longer sources of useful information for practicing psychiatrists. Very superficial. Cannot be used to guide treatment.

This book is an excellent, evidence-based psychopharmacology text. Previous rating has suggested the book is tainted due to ethical considerations, which is utter nonsense. This is the best text for the subject out there. If you are concerned about validity, the references are listed in the text for you to follow and read. unlike other psychopharm texts, it is not based primarily upon opinion and conjecture. Highly recommended.

This is an extremely comprehensive text written by many experts in their respective fields. It is an excellent reference that it is thoroughly referenced. The main drawback is that the writing is sometimes poor and there are not enough diagrams. It can be quite dense reading and is not suitable for beginners.
Anything published by APA should be avoided at all cost. I have wasted a lot of money before and would never invest again.
