This book by Ann Gesme, while now a bit dated, was a wonderful follow up to this visit. A very good book for those who wish to learn more about Norwegians beyond Ole and Lena jokes.

This book by Ann Gesme, while now a bit dated, was a wonderful follow up to this visit. Her heritage is Norwegian; while she had been to Norway before I had not, and so I learned many things, saw many places, and truly enjoyed my first exposure to this beautiful land. Sep 02, 2016 Sharon Inscore rated it it was amazing.

Focusing on the Norwegian period of their lives makes this book uniquely informative and valuable, since there are already many good books about the American period

Between a Rock and a Hard Place is the autobiography of Aron Ralston

Between a Rock and a Hard Place is the autobiography of Aron Ralston.

Home Aron Ralston Between a Rock and a Hard Place. I put my left hand under the boulder and push hard, harder, HARDER!, to exert a maximum downward force on my radius bone. Between a rock and a ha. .Between a Rock and a Hard Place, . 1. As I slowly bend my arm down and to the left, a Pow! reverberates like a muted cap-gun shot up and down Blue John Canyon. I don’t say a word, but I reach to feel my forearm. There is an abnormal lump on top of my wrist. I pull my body away from the chockstone and down again, simulating the position I was just in, and feel a gap between the serrated edges of my cleanly broken arm bone. To Michelle Kiel, Ann Fort, Sue Doss, and Dave Brush, my thanks for your support of my parents in those most terrifying days. This book is a testimony to the love of my parents, Donna and Larry Ralston, and my awesome sister, Sonja Marie Ralston Elder. For the memories we’ve had together and for the ones we have yet to create, I got out of that canyon. With special love for Marjorie Ralston and Grace Anderson, and in memory of my grandfathers, P. K. Ralston and Karl Anderson, and our family friend Betty Darr-I think of you every time I see a sunrise.

Aron Ralsted's Between a Rock and a Hard Place is an amazing read. Finally, I must mention that the book includes a collection of full-color photographs of Ralston before, during and after the accident. It was amazing to see the exact place where this took place and what Ralston looked like during his entrapment.

Very informative and interesting book about life in Norway in the 19th century. My only con was the price. I paid a lot of money for a paperback.

This book has a lot of wonderful background information on life in Norway. The most helpful part for me as I research my Norwegian ancestors is the explanation of the patronymic naming system and the exceptions to the rules.

Between Rocks and Hard Places is a pleasure to read. Ann Urness Gesme is the rare scholar who writes with her eye always on the heart and soul of her subjects: the Norwegians who emigrated to the United States. She answers the questions you had in mind and those you hadn't thought to ask, taking genealogical research off the dry Census page and into the real lives of our Norwegian ancestors.
