I lecture undergraduate courses in community ecology and use this book supplemented with articles. The two stars are for the Kindle edition, which is missing many figures, I assume because of copyright issues. It is, however, no mention of this on the Amazon information that I could see before ordering. This makes many chapters incomplete, for example in chapter 4 about predation, 5 out of 20 figures are missing.

I also have the paperback edition, which I give 4 stars due to its great detailed overview of community ecology, it must be the best out there so far. It is clearly written, but it could have been more pedagogical, as it sometimes feels like patterns and theories are being listed up. But I guess it is up to me to make it exciting for the students. A plus for the ability to download slides with figures (some of them) from the publisher's website.

Super boring to read

The textbook is used for a college course and it meets my expectations. The text is clear and concise. Graphs and tables are helpful.

My intention in writing this is not to slam the author, and I don't want to write much more than to say the book really needs updating. I understand the relevance of the topics discussed in this book, however the delivery is lacking. It is an important book and some may say it is well written, I happen to completely disagree.

I have no issue studying for the purposes of gaining a broadened knowledge base, I am not a student who memorizes material and moves on, I am a masters student (Biology) with a cumulative 4.0, and I happen to enjoy the topic. I would suggest finding an alternative to this book, or try finding supplemental material. One strategy I employed was reviewing the topics in the book in contemporary scientific literature, it helped quite a bit.

Absolutely a good text book.
But many figures cannot be seen in the electronic version for copyright protection.
It must be clearly declared in the Amazon page!
I should have bought a paperback version....
Sad.

This book is a classic in community ecology. It provides a thorough background in all of the major areas in community ecology and is useful for undergraduate students, graduate students and researchers alike.

This is a very important book but unfortunately it's a very hard book to read. It is poorly organized and there are way too many examples with names and studies flung around with out much care to the actual ideas that are presented. Even as an advanced ecologist I found this very difficult. Many of the figures are pulled out of papers without giving much context or help to understand the purpose.

It is too bad. I read the whole thing and was able to parse down the important, main ideas. I doubt I'll go back to this book as a reference. It would be just too hard to find the information.
The product itself was exactly what I wanted. I was a little disappointed it didn't come sooner. I ordered it for my classes and thought it would come within 5-10 business days but ended up taking almost two and a half weeks to come, which was frustrating.
