These results are in line with most of the studies in the literature underlining that growth in labour productivity stimulates wage growth, the relationship being explained both empirically ( Dobrot v a, 1997;Roman, 2003;Christou and Fernandez, 2007;Stiglitz, 2008) and in a statistical or econometric approach ( Foley and Michl, 1999;Duménil and Lévy, 2003;Sharpe et al, 2008).

This report also explores the relationship between labour productivity and real wages by province and by sector . Between 1980 and 2005, the median real earnings of Canadians workers stagnated, while labour productivity rose 37 per cent. This report analyzes the reasons for this situation.

Figure 2 displays labour productivity growth and export growth for a sample of developed and emerging economies during 2003-2007 and 2013-2015. The data illustrates a positive correlation between export and labour productivity growth within countries, confirming the literature findings. For example, labour productivity and export growth in the United States decelerated from an average of . and . per cent, respectively, in 2003-2007 to an average of only . per cent, respectively, in 2013-2015.
