Adolescence and Delinqucney: An Object Relations Theory Approach is less an attempt to apply object relations theory to a particular population than it is an attempt to illuminate the seamlessness of theory and application. This book applies modern object relations theory-particularly the concept of intersubjectivity as articulated by Thomas Ogden-to a population for which the 'treatment du jour' is increasingly. Taking his lead from the delinquent adolescents in his practice, Dr. Brodie presents a treatment approach based on respect rather than condescension.

Home, Child and Adolescent Studies. Author(s) : Bruce R. Brodie. Publisher : Jason Aronson. This book applies modern object-relations theory to a population for which the treatment du jour is increasingly. Taking his lead from the delinquent adolescents in his practice, he presents a treatment approach in which adolescents are related to as people, rather than as transitory objects passing through a 'stage. The book presents theory and case examples in a dialectical relationship, illuminating the seamlessness of theory and application.

Adolescence and Delinquency brings a broader, more complex perspective to adolescent treatment

Adolescence and Delinquency brings a broader, more complex perspective to adolescent treatment. Bruce Brodie reflects on his 20 years of clinical work at "the Center," a comprehensive residential treatment facility for delinquent boys and girls, those typically considered "the worst of the worst. One would think such a setting would shun psychodynamic interventions. The opposite is true. Brodie spells out how psychoanalytic theories, and object relations in particular, are utilized with this highly disturbed population. In a densely packed book, Adolescence and Delinquency shows how to effectively apply.

This book outlines the essentials of object relations theory, leaning on the work of Melanie Klein, Donald Winnicott and Thomas Ogden to analyse the behaviour and thinking of the young people at the centre. This book applies modern object relations theory―particularly the concept of intersubjectivity as articulated by Thomas Ogden―to a population for which the 'treatment du jour' is increasingly cognitive-behavioral. Taking his lead from the delinquent adolescents in his practice, Dr. Brodie presents a treatment approach based on respect rather than condescension. Adolescents are related to as people, rather than as transitory objects passing through a 'stage.' Rather than judging their feelings and behaviors as 'aberrant,' the author views them as having emerged out of the complex matrix of his patients' lives. Adolescence and Delinqucney: An Object Relations Theory Approach is less an attempt to apply object relations theory to a particular population than it is an attempt to illuminate the seamlessness of theory and application. Theory and case examples are presented in a dialectical relationship, psychological theory having no meaning other than an attempt to understand real people, and the people we work with are unintelligible outside some systematic frame of reference.

I rarely write reviews, but as a Psychology grad student hoping to work with teenagers as an MFT, this book was absolutely incredible. It seamlessly blends theory from an object relations perspective, with current thoughts on intersubjectivity. Can't wait for the next one.

Bruce Brodie has the rare ability to take a seemingly esoteric theory and explain it in an informative and relatable way. In addition to demystifing object-relations theory, I was inspired and humbled by Brodie's illustration of his work with the clients and interns at the Center. As a therapist, this book has greatly enriched my work with adolescents. I would recommend it to anyone seeking to understand and find more empathy for adolescents in their personal lives or professional practice.

This book is an excellent reference on both adolescence and object-relations theory. The writing is clear and easy to understand, at times even poetic. The rich and abundant case material makes the book accessible. What comes through and makes the reader return to the book, again and again, is Dr. Brodie's profound respect and love for the young people he has worked with.

Excellent, highly-readable overview of object relations theory, in addition to stated topic of adolescence and delinquency. Brodie reminds me of Nancy McWilliams in his ability to present complex ideas simply and understandably. An enjoyable read!
