It's hard teaching with a textbook with dated stats! Many of the chapters have statistical analyses from the 80s and 90s, which are indeed relevant--perhaps for a more advanced course in Sociology, or a historical sociology course, but not for a course on contemporary social problems. Much has changed since 9/11 and Obama's election--this book simply needs to retire. My department insisted on this text, because they have used it for years, but I would never assign it if I had a choice! Some of the framework is usable, however many of the chapters have stats that are no longer representative, forcing the professor to have to supplement with a great deal of additional materials/articles. You're better off using articles and chapters from more recent books and studies than to assign this and struggle through a significant amount very outdated information. There are new chapters in the latest volume, but they don't make up for the rest. Total waste of money and time!

Great book, written well, easy to follow, great examples of social issues vs. social problems. Required for Sociology Class: Contemporary Social Issues in America. Very happy this was a selected reading by my professor. I read this book cover to cover and actually enjoyed it and learned a lot from it. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about social issues and problems.

I'm still reviewing this book, but so far it has several articles I've used/referenced in discussions.

I do not like purchasing items that should not be sold. They told me it was a teachers copy but I did not know what that meant until I saw the notice on the book.

The book cover is wrong on here but since I looked over the description, it was the book I needed .. so just read the description carefully, don't go by the cover

Content was very knowledgable and worthy of research outside of class. Wish my class did writing assignments based on the readings.

My advice is to look past the misspellings of non-important words and keep your corrections in your head. If you do not know how to spell, "school," or, "institution," just read the entire paragraph and see if the misspelling really affects the message of the reading.
arrived quickly and as described. Thanks!
