Comparative Politics Today is the text that helped define the discipline of comparative politics, and it continues to set the standard in examining the purpose of government and comparing the world’s diverse political systems. Written by leading comparativists and area study specialists, this text begins with chapters that clarify key concepts in politics and government and show how theoretical frameworks describe and analyze the differences and the similarities among countries. The twelve country studies that follow focus on countries that are leaders within their regions and the larger world. Each country study includes the most current information and consistently applies the theoretical framework to explore broad issues like why some countries modernize more quickly or why some are more democratic. With numerous photos, figures, and tables to clarify complex political data and structures, Comparative Politics Today helps students learn about other countries, regions, and the world, and it will help them ask–and answer–fundamental questions about politics and government.

All around, this book is half decent. The survey chapters at the beginning were acceptable, if longwinded, and the country profile idea is novel.

However, when used this book is lacking, especially when compared to Principles of Comparative Politics (08) by Clark, William Roberts - Golder, Matt - Golder, Sona Nadeniche [Paperback (2008)] which is the other book that is frequently used in comparative politics classes. After discussing it with my head prof following the semester, he assured me that he would not be using this book again. Even in an intro level class, this book sounds as though it is literally written for a fourth grade audience. Too much of the book's efforts are devoted to making captivatingly pretty graphs (albeit with shades of blue in this edition, but the newer one uses more colors), but itjust fails to connect with students at all, leaving them confused.

Another aspect is that it is simply a dull book. For example, the country profiles are over sixty pages long apiece. Assigning that in a class is guaranteed to produce groans galore, and it lacks a je ne sais quois that is a hallmark of good books but keeps the students flipping the pages.

Not much positive to say about a POLS book anyway, but I did not personally find it to be very helpful or a useful learning tool.

It's served its' purpose thus far.
My few complaints are that the chapters are so long, and the information isn't as direct as it could be.

I needed this book for my political science class. So far, I have learned a lot about the different political systems and how they are being compared everyday with Democracy. At first, I thought I was going to be reading a boring textbook like I have been doing for the past 3 years in college, but I was wrong. What I like about this book is that it is set at a reasonable price. I have not finished the course yet, but I am aiming for an A. To anyone who is studying about comparative politics you are in for a real treat!

Good Luck.
