This is a very helpful and at times really moving book for parents struggling to keep their cool and raise great toddlers. Eileen Johnson runs one of the most sought-after pre-k schools in downtown NYC and it's great to see her philosophies on paper and accessible to people in other areas. Her approach is basically that instead of defining yourself as a 'disciplinarian' or a superior to your child, you should see your child as a full-thinking and full-feeling person who just doesn't have enough experience data to formulate the same judgments as adults. She uses lots of specific examples based on her experiences teaching, running a school, raising her own kids, and coaching parents and teachers for the past 30 years. She gives direct strategies for dealing with common parenting situations (pushing/aggression etc.)and also helps you appreciate your child's general perspective so you can contextualize whatever situations she doesn't address (things like when your child asks you lots of questions it's because they are legitimately confused and in general we underestimate how much time kids spend being confused; or that when your child wants to read the same book over and over again it's because they are learning something from it and it takes them that repetition to get what they need from it..). We have a 2 1/2 year old son and this book really couldn't have hit the spot any more than it did. We read it in one night and literally saw our son differently the next day. Not only has it given us some solid strategies that really have worked - but it's brought a lot of the joy (and patience) back to our everyday parenting. Very cool. Strongly strongly recommend!

Eileen Johnson clearly understands the emotional needs of children and expresses how we can better attend to them. As a mother of 2 and an elementary educator, Ms. Johnson's knowledge has helped me to be a better listener and supporter of my children and students. I found her information and techniques to be thought provoking as well as clearly exemplified in the methodology.
This book is so invaluable that I have arranged to have a book study with my educator colleagues in the new year to work towards integrating the wisdom set forth in the book. We are hopeful to even have Ms. Johnson join our group since we are near NYC and her school.
Ms. Johnson insight is beyond compare and will change how you encounter your children and/or students on a daily basis.
