Through a discussion on three plaster cameos from the collection of the Museum of Art and Archaeology in Columbia, Missouri, I wish to explore the aura that surrounds these plaster cameos that propelled them to such popularity. These plaster cameos were collected and manufactured in almost exactly the same manner as the Romans and the power of these gems to facilitate interaction with the antique compelled eighteenth-century collections.
