I recently finished reading a book by Michael Scheuer called, Marching Towards Hell, America and Islam after Iraq that I think is just wonderful.

Scheuer's book, Marching Toward Hell: America and Islam After Iraq was published on February 12, 2008. In Marching Toward Hell, Scheuer laments "the war in Iraq that was instigated by . citizen Israel-firsters and their evangelical Christian allies". Through Our Enemies' Eyes. He continues, Because both . political parties are wholly owned subsidiaries of the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and the Israeli government, there is no large-scale . military withdrawal from Iraq in the cards.

Unfortunately, Scheuer’s new book, Marching Toward Hell, grandiloquently and somewhat misleadingly subtitled . Scheuer appears to be frustrated by the fact that his analysis was not adopted by the Bush administration.

Unfortunately, Scheuer’s new book, Marching Toward Hell, grandiloquently and somewhat misleadingly subtitled America and Islam After Iraq, has all the weaknesses of his earlier works with almost none of their strengths.

This book began life entitled From Pandora’s Box: America and Islam After Iraq. I chose the title because I ini. tially thought there was something credible to the claim that the disaster that has occurred in Iraq-and Afghanistan as well-amounted to a set of amazing, unintended, and unpredictable consequences.

I purchased "Marching Toward Hell: America and Islam After Iraq" Paperback – February 10, 2009 by Michael Scheuer to get some inside knowledge of the fighting now going on in Iraq. The Sunni sect of Islam is now fighting after being deposed by the US and it's allied invasion after the Afghan war was pretty much taken care of and the Bush Administration, with VP Dick Cheney and Paul Wolfowitz heading up the Neo-Con element of the Republican Party, pushing overthrow of Saddam Husain's Sunni minority regime which caused the US so many headaches and hassles over Weapons of Mass Destruction. Once deposed and disbanded, the Iraqi Sunni Army, began the fight to regain power and eventually became ISIS, the Islamic State, which has take much of the country back with Islamic fighters from the rest of the Islamic Sunni War. It is ongoing as I write and with surely continue even if over powered by the forces aligned with the Iraqi government forces and those who support the country. The US is still involved after it mostly abandoned the fight after 2011 - 2015 and has supplied air support, while it remains reluctant to place any more boots on the ground, until the Neo-Con element of the Right Wing politics of Washington, once again take power back from the Democrats. This book traces the history of that war and the forces who continue to fight there. I like it.

I recently finished reading a book by Michael Scheuer called, “Marching Towards Hell, America and Islam after Iraq” that I think is just wonderful. After working in CIA for over 20 years, the author is well informed and gives a very clear and honest view of the complex problems of American foreign politics in the middle east. I think this book should be required reading by all members of intelligence community CIA, NSA, and FBI , as well as all members of the congress and all candidates for presidency of the U.S. Absolutely a wonderful book, a breath of fresh air amongst so much confusion and deceptions with great intellectual depth, unbelievable sincerity, humble humanity, and forceful moral authority. In short, it is people like Michael Scheuer that revive one’s hope for the future of United States and hence the cause of democracy all over this world.

His book has also many wonderful quotations like :

“The hen is the wisest of all the animal creation, because she never cackles until after the egg is laid,” Abraham Lincoln 1863

“She [America] well knows that by once enlisting herself under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extraction, in all the wars of intrigue and intrigue, of individual avarice, and ambitions, which assume the colors and usurp the standard of freedom. The fundamental maxims of her policy would insensibly change from liberty to force. She might become dictatress of the world. She would no longer be the ruler of her own spirit” John Quincy Adams, 1821

After I read this book, so many aspects of the complex problems of U.S government and its involvements with Islamic nations became clear to me. It also becomes abundantly clear that without careful and honest political analysis of the problems as presented in this book the citizens of U.S. cannot be expected to see through all the deceptions and soap-operas and make wise and informed decisions concerning their government and the direction of its policies.

Scheuer's book is an excellent analysis of some of the failings of America's war on terror! I love the way he criticises both parties and their respective cronies whether it is the neo cons, the environmentalists or the pro Israeli lobby. His analysis of the history of both Iraq and Afghanistan and how the Bush administration spectacularly failed to grasp the importance of both was also great as was his analysis of the problems of spreading democracy around the world. My only problem with his book is his utter failure to condemn Ronald Reagan (the Beirut Barracks Bombings of 1983, support for Saddam Hussein with weapons and intelligence and his failure to do something about the attack on the USS Stark in 1987!!) I can see why he is critical of Clinton but seriously, doesn't Reagan deserve to be blamed at least in part for his support of the Afghans in the 1980's?!

The author demonstrates how using Cold War strategies and frameworks for approaching the conflict with Islamism is fruitless, counterproductive, and even destructive. He does not just criticize, however, but offers approaches and solutions to keep the United States safe. The author is ruthless and relentless, even Machiavellian, in his desire to protect and defend the United States from Islamic militancy. An excellent, eye-opening read, even if somewhat dated, because the approach to Islam remains captive to Cold War thinking.

Scheuer does it again - and is our "go to" author relative to the subject matter contained in his books! Highly recommend both the author and book to anyone who wishes to read up or brush up on the subject matter of the ME or MENA!

This is bar-none the best book I've read about our role in the middle east. I pay a lot of attention to world affairs, U.S. policy, middle east and U.S. history so am not uninformed or un-opinionated about our situation in Iraq and Afghanistan. But Scheuer has utilized all his skills in incorporating our motives, history, ignorance, duplicity, political motives and deceit in explaining with great clarity and resolve how we got into this mess, why we got in this mess and what we would have to do to get out. It was a stroke of genius that he has many quotes from our Founding Fathers to remind the reader in what circumstances we should implement our character and resolve. It's not light reading because the narrative requires a lot of thought but forget your pre-conceptions and your political views and dig into this insightful tome with an open mind. This book will blow you away.
Why our current foreign policy is both naive and vicious -- to ourselves and others.
