Cultural policy is the government actions, laws and programs that regulate, protect, encourage and financially (or otherwise) support activities related to the arts and creative sectors, such as painting, sculpture, music, dance, literature, and film.

The idea of cultural policy was developed at UNESCO in the 1960s.

Definition of ‘public arts and cultural institutions’

Definition of ‘public arts and cultural institutions’. For the purpose of this document, the term ‘public’ broadly refers to those institu-tions subsidised through public funding, no matter what their legal statute is. In fact, the main issue relates to the way public funding for culture reaches audiences.
