Jean de La Fontaine collected fables from a wide variety of sources, both Western and Eastern, and adapted them into French free verse. They were issued under the general title of Fables in several volumes from 1668 to 1694 and are considered classics of French literature. Humorous, nuanced and ironical, they were originally aimed at adults but then entered the educational system and were required learning for school children.

A birthday present for a granddaughter and she loved it!

La Fontaine's fables are for all time and ages. I was introduced to the simplicity and morals by my father as he picked up learning to read English late in life. He was learning all the time.

I have selected this book for my grand daughter who is going to be two come July 2013. The book may not be simple to read, but she has parents who will be motivated (I hope) to read the fables themselves and repeat the stories to the child. In the process some stories might be refresher course or a new moral to learn. It's never late to learn.

Vive La Fontaine.
