Gore has such an incredible way of infusing magic into her words, her descriptions are so vivid, and I love that her series of memoirs means we see different pieces of her life through different frames. I am always impressed with how she balances the twinned strands of love and trauma, fused together into life.

The author writes with a voice that captures a place in time like no other. The book is reminiscent of both Joan Didion's Slouching Toward Bethlehem and Ken Kesey's Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, but set in suburban Palo Alto and told from a wise child's point of view. It is remarkable to find such perspective and authenticity in a personal narrative (or is it "literary journalism"?). Silicon Valley is a world of its own now; it has reinvented itself and repopulated itself with a new breed of superhuman. But as Hewlett & Packard were just striking it rich, an entirely different culture existed in the town that grew up alongside Stanford University. This is an absolutely marvelous, historically accurate, must-read book.

It is had to put an Ariel Gore book down. I tend to stay up all night to read one. Such a gifted writer!

This little book is a true gem...in short scenes of suburban dysfunction like so many dark prose poems, Ariel Gore finds a way to describe what cannot be said, and the unease that anyone who was slightly conscious in their teenage years can identify with. She does it with wit, and a razor sharp observation of the moment and the times. It is an easy read, sad and uplifting at the same time.

I love this book (and pretty much all of Ariel Gore's books) so much, I buy them as gifts for friends. I am always impressed with how she balances the twinned strands of love and trauma, fused together into life. One of my favorite books.
