The Routledge Atlas of Classical History: From 1700 BC to AD 565 - Routledge Historical Atlases (Paperback). Michael Grant (author).

This authoritative atlas surveys more than 2,000 years of classical history, from ancient Egypt and the growth of the Greek city-states, to the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. Edited by the eminent classical historian Michael Grant and based on the most current research, the Atlas offers 92 maps covering an extraordinary range of topics, including the spread of Judaism and Christianity, the coinage of the Roman Empire, Pompeii, and the origins of the Greek and Latin writers. The great historical milestones are here, from the Battle of Salamis in 480 BC, to the conquests of Alexander the Great and the Second Punic War (218-201 BC), to the barbarian invasions of the fifth century AD. Included as well are maps showing the world according to Herodotus and Ptolemy, and the rivers, mountains, and rainfall of the Mediterranean area. Other maps provide detailed coverage of religious, political, cultural, economic, and agricultural aspects of the ancient world. Throughout the atlas, annotations impart important historical background and insight, and a detailed index provides both modern and ancient place names. This fully revised Fifth Edition of the Atlas of Classical History offers new maps, including a map of the ancient world in its entirety, maps charting the changing frontiers of the Roman Empire under Julius Caesar and Augustus, and a map detailing the persecution of the Christians.

92 maps cover the period from 1700 BC to 565 AD. Famous popular historian Michael Grant has compiled this collection. The maps themselves are simple line drawings of no artistic interest at all, think of a simple map you might find in a newspaper and you would be on track. The subjects of the maps and the large number of them gives the book its utility.
The collection focuses on the world of the ancient Greeks and Romans, ending with the conquests of the Emperor Justinian. Want to know the rainfall of the Mediterranean world? Got it. Need to know the location of the Meander River? Got it. How about iron deposits in Asia Minor? Well, you get the idea. Grant tells us about the ebb and flow of empires and nations, of the migrations of warrior peoples but he also gets into the gold, wine and other resources of field and mountain that people of any age always take a careful interest in. Century after century, we see the same basic landscape shown over and over. But as the centuries change, so do the empires and peoples across the familiar landscape.
This is not a volume to moon over in wonder. This volume can be likened to a simple tool, a hammer perhaps, a tool with a particular purpose and no other. I have on my wall an old map, a thing of beauty, a pleasure to look at. This isn't that kind of map or book of maps. But in the
92 maps we receive a boat load of information. I think Grant had that transfer of information at the top of his mind when he made this book for us.
