Wish that the book included the term it's famous for introducing in English, "serendipity." I need to keep searching for an English translation of the story that specifically refers to the kingdom of serendip. It does do a nice job of including characters that are not white without comment on the color of the characters' skin.

This is a charming story. I wish the publisher had made a more pleasing visual. The illustrations are dull and washed out.

This is a great story to use as a teaching tool for predictions and inferences.

Adapted from the Arabian Nights, this story tells of the adventures of three princes who wish to woo a beautiful and wise princess. The poorest prince must compete against two wealthy ones for her hand. Who will win the contest? My favorite thing about this book is that the princess is not valued for her looks alone, but because she is so very wise. Likewise, the way the princes compete isn't through trials of strength and looks, but through kindness and cleverness. A timeless classic, well adapted for children ages 3 and up.

This is the story about three princes who live somewhere in the Middle East. They all long to marry a beautiful princess. She must choose only one. They go out to seek their fortune(s) and in the process, find that the one they wish to wed is deathly ill. A very good lesson is taught with the plot in this story.

As an ESL teacher, I'm always looking for books to share as a read aloud to honor my students' native cultures. Not only is this a noteworthy book, but the illustrations are magnificent. My students from the Middle East always enjoy the sharing of this story with their new friends. I applaud the princess in this tale for her choice of a prince. Her wisdom is extraordinary; she provides a worthwhile lesson for all students.
