Football is a game of numbers-fourth and inches, the three-man rush, a two point conversion, first down. Even with the obvious numbers in the statistics, rules and game situations, the players' uniform numbers themselves have become part of professional football and its lore. NFL players, like modern-day gladiators, are fitted head-to-toe in protective gear, obscuring even their faces from their most loyal fans.

Surprising but this really is a good book and reference to have. It was published in 2005 and could be updated but it is an excellent history on players through their uniform numbers. Recommended.

Compiling the numbers of almost everyone who ever played in the NFL is unprecedented, and the book would be amazing for that alone. But Maxymuk has also used the opportunity to provide interesting information about the players (like which ones played other pro sports, which became head coaches, which became referees, etc.) and about the teams -- origin of the nickname and the names that almost got picked instead, oddities unique to a particular club, etc. -- a great mix of facts, figures and fascinating trivia.

If you are a fan of history, statistics, and football, you will enjoy turning the pages of this book. It is not a sit-down-and-read-cover-to-cover book, more like a reference book to preserve the details of teams and players. I especially liked the defunct team information, some teams I had never heard of and some I had forgotten.

Lots of work went into this book and I commend the author for a job well done!

Invaluable book, with instant access to uniform numbers for every player who ever played in the NFL. Very easy to research, broken down by team in numerical order. Excellent Book!

john should be commended for the attempt to list the jersey # history of the league. be advised though of the limitations of this book. numerous players wore an additional number. too many to name here. when you study as much film as I have.....and you see a player wearing a different number it gets your attention. yet....this book is an outstanding source for quickly finding who wore what jersey #, and other fun facts. a must have for any library.
