Though Thomas Brussig belongs to the post-Wende generation of German writers who satirize the Ostalgie (nostalgia about the "good ol' days" of life behind the iron curtain in East Germany), his Heroes Like Us stands out in the torrents of funny stories about life in the DDR. In his sober survey of socialist realism, Brussig has a particular sense of humor as he mixes the serious (propaganda) with the improbably comedic circumstances.

Thomas Brussig (born 1964) is a German writer best known for his satirical novels that deal with the German Democratic Republic. Brussig was born in East Berlin. After attending the "Heinrich-Hertz" School, he went on to train as a builder. In 1984 he finished school and training, and served in the East German National People's Army (German: Nationale Volksarmee or NVA). Brussig found it difficult to wield a weapon and had a hard time.

Thomas Brussig’s Helden wie wir (Heroes Like Us, 1995) caused a notable stir in the German press after its publication, and has been aptly described as ‘the media event of winter 1995’. Within a year, the novel was already in its eighth printing, and an adaptation for stage was on the programmes of numerous theatres; in 1999, a film version was premiered to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall

But about 25% of this book is about the main character's genitalia and other things I can't manage to type much less revisit.

Thomas Brussig’s much-discussed picaresque novel Helden wie wir (1995) held the mirror of satire up to these images - and his timing was perfect. 2 Earlier literary attempts by East Germans to capture the GDR past and the turbulent unifying present were swallowed in media blitzes such as the one we refer to above Thomas Brussig, Am kilrzeren Ende der Sonnenallee (Berlin: Verlag Volk & Welt, 1999) and the film Sonnenallee (1999), directed by Leander Hau8mann.

This author has a wonderfully comic and observant voice. Jonathan Franzen said in an interview that he liked this writer, so that was enough for me to run out and get it.

Somewhat modeled on Portnoy's complaint, but not so racy. The narrower presents a slightly delusional story of living in the DDR, of his parents, and of the insane world.
