The term Cistercian (French Cistercien), derives from Cistercium, the Latin name for the village of Cîteaux, near Dijon in eastern France. In 1335, the French cardinal Jacques Fournier, a former Cistercian monk and the son of a miller, was elected and consecrated Pope Benedict XII. Georges Duby (7 October 1919 – 3 December 1996) was a French historian who specialised in the social and economic history of the Middle Ages. He ranks among the most influential medieval historians of the twentieth century and was one of France's most prominent public intellectuals from the 1970s to his death. Born to a family of Provençal craftsmen living in Paris, Duby was initially educated in the field of historical geography before he moved into history.

Georges Michel Claude Duby was a French educator, author, historian who specialized in the social and economic history of the Middle Ages. Early in his career, Duby was an assistant in the faculty of letters at the University of Lyon beginning in 1944. After stints as professor of medieval history at the University of Franche-Comté (1950) and Aix-Marseille University (1951), he began twenty-two years at the College de France as a professor of the history of medieval societies in 1970.
