This is a cool little book, a very satisfying and useful look at the mechanics of handwriting. Other books teach particular sets of letterforms. This book does that, too -- with a template that emphasizes ergonomics and legibility. But the authors maintain that perfectly copied letterforms look immature, and an adult hand will have been customized to suit its writer. To help you make your writing your own, the book shows how strokes, letters, and connectors work so that you can change the template without the handwriting falling apart. These same ideas let you make ergonomic/legibility changes to your existing handwriting without learning an entire new alphabet if you prefer.

I loved this book because it was exactly what I was looking for in a book about improving my handwriting.
It takes quite a lot of practice to develop a nice handwriting and this book provided me with the exercises I needed.
It starts out by pointing out a few common handwriting vices (a few of which I identified myself with) and then moves on to exercises about improvement. My favourite exercises are the ones about developing a rhythm when writing cursive. It is indeed a good feeling when you're able to lock in that rhythm. There are tips and exercises on how to make your handwriting more mature as well. The book ends with some tips on writing with a fountain pen with an italic nib, which gives your handwriting some nice line variations.
The script suggested by the authors as a baseline is the Italic script so if you are looking for a change in handwriting that leans toward Spencerian script or English Roundhand, then this book is not for you.
I believe this is a great book and I don't understand why it doesn't get as many referrals as Write Now, by Getty and Dubai.

Actually useful and will help you change how you write IF and ONLY if you commit to the exercises.
Only wish it had more exercises and more clear explanations for them.

This was exactly what I was looking for: a guide for adults who already can/do use cursive, but want to sharpen their skills. I particularly appreciated the way the authors emphasize learning the basic, "model," script, then modifying it to reflect the writer's own style and personality.
Wiliniett
Easy to read and has great drills for each letterform group that will in fact improve the legibility and quickness of any handwriting style. This is the best little secret out there for anyone who truly wants to improve his handwriting.

This book is well done and geared to help adults fix their handwriting. If you follow the exercises, it works. The authors seem to be British and the text leans towards the italics style of writing. After working on this book for a while I moved into learning italics, which has been fairly easy and fun. My hand writing has never looked better.

I learned cursive writing years ago in a Catholic School from nuns who would slap your hand with a ruler if you did it wrong! For decades after that, even though I loved to write, my hand would cramp up when I wrote too long, and a full page would deteriorate from legible to scribble. Don't even talk to me about all the handwriting analyzers who see all kinds of things about you from your scribble! I can type extremely well but really wanted to put pen to paper again and enjoy it. Voilà! Up popped this book. At $10.95, Free Shipping and Handling, I figured I can't go too far wrong even if it wasn't so good. Well, it is! It's easy to read and go through and so common sense and practical. I read through the whole book first - it's an easy read - before I started doing the exercises. I did them all, and it's amazing how such simple stuff can be effective to such a satisfying degree. I remember being taught NOT to break your writing in the middle of a word. Well, I learned from this book (to my relief) it's a good idea to lift your pen every four or five letters. I am totally convinced that cursive should be taught to children in elementary school (not by slapping their hands with a ruler!) because it teaches them the finer movement of hand and fingers as well as discipline. If you are an adult who needs that kind of training, I heartily recommend this book. It's an easy but efficient read.
My handwriting was terrible for most of my life, and I am almost 50.

I doubted anything could be done; but this book showed me otherwise. As I kid I hated school. I scratched my way through college. Since then, I've been very heavily dependent on computers. Until this book, I knew nothing of penmanship instruction. I'd been making fundamental errors; and I am left-handed to boot.

Upon my first read it my problems became clear. I started doing the excersizes. It was daunting at first, but I started getting results after a few days (2-3 hrs per day).

Trying to keep a journal, or writing down ideas, has been hellish for years because my writing was so slow, erratic and horrible-looking, it made me feel like my thoughts and feelings were ugly by association.

I look forward to expressing myself more freely and being more fulfilled because of what I've learned from this book.

BTW, reading Walter Isaacson's Bio of Steve Jobs was what woke me up to raise my standards and improve in this area.
