The Freelance Writer’s Bible: Your Guide to A Profitable Writing Career Within One Year by David Trotter is a perfect guide for aspiring writers. Page 27 covers the topic of how to get past and/or break though obstacles towards writing, page 140 covers areas to look into for writing such as greeting cards, short fiction and poetry, Clarifying your purpose, audience, and strategy (pages 211-213), and sample strategic marketing plan. Guides like this are important to someone like me because I made a promise to my husband that I would only be a writer on the side (regardless of how much money my writing makes) and my intent is to write both books and scripts under a pen name (for reasons I prefer to avoid elaborating on via this forum). Guides like The Freelance Writer’s Bible are pivotal to a novice such as myself who has a lot to learn both in writing and doing so under a pen name (at the least one for my book writing and another pen name for my script writing).

David Trottier has done an excellent job of compiling some great resources and references to help launch a successful writing career for the beginning writer and to revitalize that of the professional writer.

The book is set up as an interactive workbook that not only leads the writer down a path of technical know-how in getting writing jobs and getting published, but helps one to form a positive image of self as a writer and to develop a set of personal writing and life goals. It also gives some advice, encouragement, and other things you can do as a writer to keep yourself motivated and focused on your writing career goals and aspiratons.

Trottier details 17 different "fields" or "categories" of writing and shows how any serious writer can make a living by writing within any one of them or a combination of them.

This is an essential book for the career writer or anyone who wants to have a go at making a living being a writer. If you have the perseverance and drive to put this book into action, you will be a successful writer.

Marketing is the part of a writing career that is often overlooked and yet is one of the most important job requirements. This book offers helpful insight.

Experienced writers who know exactly what they like doing or have been writing for years may be tempted to skip the first section of the book, which focuses on pinpointing a writing "mission" and identifying goals. Do the exercises anyway. Like me, you might find that they help clarify your goals and remind you of why you started writing in the first place. I found Trottier's method of project planning immensely helpful when tackling big projects. His list of possible markets for freelancers included ideas I'd never heard of before, such as editing or co-writing articles for scientific/tech journals, where the articles are written by sci/tech professionals who don't necessarily know how to write well. This is one of the few books on freelancing that I'd actually buy rather than relying on the library.
