Sahara is the book that Michael Palin wrote to accompany the BBC television documentary series Sahara with Michael Palin

Sahara is the book that Michael Palin wrote to accompany the BBC television documentary series Sahara with Michael Palin. This book, like the other books that Palin wrote following each of his seven trips for the BBC, consists both of his text and of many photographs to illustrate the trip. All of the pictures in this book were taken by Basil Pao, the stills photographer who was part of the team who did the trip (Basil Pao also produced a book, Inside Sahara, containing many more of his pictures).

Sahara with Michael Palin is a four-part BBC television series presented by British comedian and travel presenter Michael Palin, and first broadcast in 2002. In it, Palin travelled around the Sahara in Northern - and Western Africa, meeting people and visiting places. The journey route included the following countries and territories: Gibraltar, Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Niger, Libya, Tunisia and Algeria.

Michael Palin, who did such a marvelous job with his Hemingway and Himalayan travel adventures in both TV and book forms, brings similar success to a less palatable subject: Sahara. This lovely book, filled with colorful and excellent photography, is Palin's very personal story of his 9 country/10,000 mile odyssey. He is a wonderful raconteur and guide.

Sahara documents Michael's greatest challenge yet; to cross the vast and merciless Sahara desert. If you would like your book/DVD personally signed by Michael, please write your name or the name you want in the Book/DVD Signing box when you checkout. Due to Michael’s busy schedule, please allow up to four weeks for delivery of signed books/DVDs.

Michael Palin's epic voyages have seen him circumnavigate the globe, travel from the North to the South Pole and circle the countries of the Pacific Ocean, but perhaps the greatest challenge facing an intrepid explorer is crossing the vast and merciless Sahara desert. There is no easy way to do it, and Palin's experiences are like nothing he has encountered before. As the journey unfolds, the Sahara reveals not the emptiness of endless sand dunes, but a huge and diverse range of cultures and landscapes and a long history of civilisation, trade, commerce and conquest stretching from the ancient Egyptians to the oil-rich Islamic republics of today.

This is truly exceptional. It was a wonderful TV series, and the book adds detail that they couldn't squeeze into the episodes, as well as more of Palin's wonderfully wry sense of humour. If you like travel books, or you like books about other cultures, or you just like a good non-fiction read - you could certainly do a hell of a lot worse than this one.

Seriously, someone needs to find a way to get Michael Palin and David Attenborough to breed. That is probably about the only way anyone is going to come up with a better documentary.

The Sahara, as beautiful and vibrant as it is dangerous and deadly is exquisitely revealed...warts and all.

I enjoyed the book and its tongue-in-cheek approach to different cultures and people. Palin's willingness to try anything appeals to me. I actually bought the book because I'm writing a thriller that takes place, in part, in the Sahara. I am fascinated by the Blue Men.

I love Michael Palin's travel shows on TV so this book is an excellent companion to the TV series. I got the hard cover edition and I'm very pleased with it. Beautiful photos. You won't be sorry you bought this. Ty

My opinion is no doubt colored by my experience in the Sahara, but I found Michael Palin's itinerary an excellent one. This is a travelogue with often excellent photos, not a scholarly book, but the author's approach is quite winning, if sometimes a bit superficial.

Having spent over a year travelling and living through most of Palin's Sahara route, I am very impressed with how he captured the magic of the area. Mr. Palin is funny, respectful and insightful. A very enjoyable read that took me back to the desert.
