I purchased this for my Dad, who requested a Marty Robbins ballads songbook. While it doesn't have all the ballads he said it was a great book.

Only 8 left in stock (more on the way). I purchased this for my Dad, who requested a Marty Robbins ballads songbook.

From his first performance in the late 1940s until his early death in 1982, Marty Robbins established himself as one of the most popular and successful singer/songwriters in the latter half of the 20th century. On the country charts, he racked up 15 #1 hits, including the crossover smashes El Paso and A White Sport Coat (and a Pink Carnation). A beloved entertainer, Robbins received honors from every major music association. El Paso became the first Grammy ever awarded to a Country song, while My Woman My Woman My Wife received the 1970 Grammy for Best Country Song. In 1969 Robbins was named artist of the decade by the Academy of Country Music. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1975 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1982. In addition to his success as a singer/songwriter, Robbins loved car racing. In the early 1970s he joined the NASCAR circuit and raced the rest of his life. Barbara's bibliography was my first purchase when I decided to write the biography of Marty Robbins. I have since met Barbara and she has been most helpful to me. I'm waiting for my next trip to Nashville to go through the source material she donated to the Country Music Hall of Fame. I hope to have "Twentieth Century Drifter: The Life of Marty Robbins" published by 2012.

Great listing of all Marty Robbins' body of work, and memories of him by the people who knew him professionally. Would have liked more personal info, but he was a very private man.

Marty Robbins was probably the greatest entertainer/showman/singer/songwriter who ever stepped onto a stage. Only his personality could surpass the talent he possessed. This author did a great job in gathering the info, there just wasn't enough 'history' of the man except for what was written in aritcles and trade papers....would have liked more personal info on the man, his family, in-depth personal opinions and beliefs in life, marriage, fame, and just more on him in general. Too bad that he didn't do more on this before he died for it is lost forever and he was too great a talent for the world to forget. His music brought so much beauty and enjoyment into so many lives that just cannot be topped. Barbara J. Pruett did a wonderful job in what she had to work with. There are thousands of 'new Marty fans' out there who have or are just 'discovering' Marty Robbins and missed the chance of a lifetime to see him perform in person....a showman all the way who really did care for the people who made him an 'icon'....his fans. He never failed to thank the people who bought his records (and sincerely, unlike most performers who do it out of 'duty') and was always giving them their 'money's worth' when they attended his shows. There are some really good performers today but all could learn a lot from this one man on how to make a masterpiece of song from just words and musical notes, perform it with a perfectly controlled and beautiful voice and then to totally please an audience with his performance without gimmicks of fire, swinging from ropes etc.. It's simply called talent (in this case maybe 'a gift' instead) and Marty Robbins was loaded with it. Perhaps Barbara, you could do a second book, pictoral edition and 'collect' hundreds of photos, maybe donated by the many fans who took the pic's at his concerts, the candid shots at the track, at home, etc. I think this would be a very interesting collection....."MARTY ROBBINS: LIFE PIC'S OF A LEGEND", or something similar.

Sadly whilst this book contains a lot of information it is not a good read. It generally just seems to be a list of extracts taken from trade papers and newspapers through the years. Not really a biography as I was expecting.
