I watched a youtube video of Max Eberle giving a pool lesson and it was so amazing that I sought out & bought the book he was plugging. Honestly, I learned more watching the 3 minute video than I did reading the book. It's tiny, a pamphlet-sized book with too many pictures. Two or three pertinent diagrams interspersed with a bunch of pictures of the author ("your author" as he likes to call himself) and other famous pool celebrities. He really spends about 100 pages telling you that your bridge hand has to be firm and a solid foundation. Save your money & play pool with someone better than you, this book was a total rip-off!

I didn't learn anything new from this book that helped me shoot better or get a better mentally strong game. Too bad too, I was really hoping it had some top notch techniques that would vastly improve my physical and mental game, but no. But none the less it was an interesting book to read for some good entertainment.

I loved Zen Pool & it completed for me the insight I gained from Bob Fancher's Pleasure is Small Motions. A beautiful book for avid shooters. Dr. Ken Rabac

The most important part of any endeavor is the mental side and Max does a great job of showing you how the physical and the mental are connected. This book will help anyone wishing to improve in pool or any sport.

Great book with lots of good pool tips. The title Zen Pool is somewhat misleading in that you wont find any Zen meditation/Pool exercizes in this book. I was looking for more of a mind training book to help with pressure situations. But this book is more about technique and practice drill instruction. I recommend this book to all billiard fans

This book, although a good read for aspiring pool players, was not at all what I expected it would be. Considering the title - Zen Pool - I thought it would be an in-depth look at the mental aspects of the game. I was under the assumption that focus, concentration, emotion, etc. would be some of the topics covered. Instead, the book is more of a fundamental starting point that covers things like your stance, the stroking line, the tangent line, and other topics like that. The topics are broken into short sections that are actually articles written by the author for various pool magazines and newsletters over time, that have now been gathered in one spot. Like I said, it's a good read and I recommend it to players who want to elevate their game by mastering the fundamentals, but the mental aspect is touched on only briefly in the book.
I really wanted to like this book. Max Eberle is known to be an excellent teacher. But he's not a writer. This book is filled with vague platitudes about focusing and clearing your mind, with virtually none of the specificity that would actually help someone do so. If you want better works to the same end, have a look at The Pleasures of Small Motions or the original Zen in the Art of Archery, both of which actually describe the difficulties and the rewards of the ability to focus fully.
