Omar Ali-Shah (Hindi: ओमर अली शाह, Urdu: عمر علی شاہ‎, romanized: nq; 1922 – 7 September 2005) was a prominent exponent of modern Naqshbandi Sufism. He wrote a number of books on the subject, and was head of a large number of Sufi groups, particularly in Latin America, Europe and Canada.

I began reading Omar Ali Shah's brother's (Idries Shah's) work in the early '70s and thought them to be the most honest discussion I had yet read. I joined groups studying that man's work. When he died, a friend told me about Omar Ali Shah's work, lent me some of his books (including The Course of the Seeker), saying that a school, under his leadership, existed and that it was possible to join. Looking through the books I could tell it was the same message, but in a different form.

Omar Ali-Shah's followers sometimes undertook organised trips to exotic locations, which he described as having a developmental, or cleansing, purpose: "One of the functions performed in the Tradition is making, keeping and deepening contacts with people, places and things, such as making trips similar to the ones we have made to Turkey and elsewhere. Dig in: you'll never reach bottom.

Ever since its first publication in 1988, this book has become recognized as a major document in 20th C Sufism, being one of the first books in which one can actually witness the process of a spiritual teaching taking place. What we have is a series of edited transcripts of a Sufi teacher talking to his pupils and laying down a baseline of references that can be incorporated into our own way of thinking, assuming we choose to do so. Just as his father Ikbal Ali Shah and his brother Idries Shah produced a body of literature, Omar Ali-Shah has produced a body of documents which reconcile our own disturbed and anguished epoch with a way of thinking and teaching that has existed since the dawn of mankind.

Excellent book. I was first entered into Sufi work 43 years ago. What benefit I could have had if
I had owned a text like this one. I believe the new reader will best benefit from repeated readings
of this text in order to assimilate its many levels of meaning...as opposed to trying to intellectually
read it like reading a newspaper. Omar Ali Shah has done a difficult thing in this attempt at bringing
real Sufi work to the Westerner.

Looking through the books I could tell it was the same message, but in a different form. I have to admit that it was several more years before I could see that Omar Ali Shah's way of expressing things - which initially seemed to me rather informal and less well organized - explained very clearly what a seeker can do to advance his own development. Somehow I had the patience to re-read this book, and then his others, and found them invaluable. Not everyone will find themselves reading them again and again, but just about anyone will sense their intrinsic value.

A book written with clear authority and responsibility. I felt the focused energy of someone who has actually done something and wishes to offer guidance and help. Finally I understand that what I need is not in a book, but that books can point toward something else.
