I simply want to say I have read it and that whilst Steiner served to free me from Eastern Theosophy and the New Age scene I found at Findhorn, Valentin Tomberg, in turn, provided me with a very different hermeneutic with which to engage Steiner.

With great clarity and precision, Steiner speaks of the fundamental nature of the human being in relation to the cosmos, the evolution of the Earth, the jour. Throughout, Steiner's emphasis is on a scientific exposition of spiritual phenomena. As he says in the final lecture: "the highest knowledge of mundane things is thoroughly compatible with the highest knowledge of spiritual truths.

Austrian-born Rudolf Steiner was a noted Goethe (see Vol. 2) scholar and private student of the occult who . 2) scholar and private student of the occult who became involved with Theosophy in Germany in 1902, when he met Annie Besant (1847-1933), a devoted follower of Madame Helena P. Blavatsky (1831-1891). Steiner believed that human beings had evolved to the point where material existence had obscured spiritual capacities and that Christ had come to reverse that trend and to inaugurate an age of spiritual reintegration. He advocated that education, art, agriculture, and science be based on spiritual principles and infused with the psychic powers he believed were latent in everyone.

This review forced me to think about the principles of what to say about somebody who is an acknowledged giant in his field. It is easy to get intimidated and tread softly, even when we have different views on some issues. I came to the conclusion that we have to stick to commonly accepted principles with regard to spiritual issues, which, in this case, means: `Always apply discrimination regardless what it is about', and `never assume that anybody has the absolute truth', which can also be stated as `there is more than one way'.

Applying these principles I find it hard to come to terms with pronouncements such as 'Through mediumism the spiritual world trespasses into the physical world', and `All experimentation with trance conditions are false path', and `Though we learn much of importance from them (mediums), this is not the right path to spiritual knowledge'. This presents as a matter of fact what should only be a matter of belief. If there is one thing we need less of, it is dogma. To me, reincarnation means that we can and should explore life fully, even if it means in hindsight that we could have done better, we still learned valuable lessons. Becoming an initiate may be an important stepping stone in our evolution, however, that does not mean it is the only purpose of life. I find it sad to see large amounts of energies being expanded just to create separation from other schools of thinking instead of rather embracing that thinking and expanding it as so aptly demonstrated by Edgar Cacey. Of course, all of this takes nothing away from the considerable achievements of Rudolph Steiner. My conclusion is therefore that the book forces us to think about some very fundamental issues, and that a book can be of value even if we do not agree with it, or at least not entirely.
Sorry, Brother Rudolph.

Rudolph Steiner is as purposeful today as he was in the early 1900's. His insight runs deep, and he is one of the few who "speaks the truth". Here is a man, who is lead by Spirit, and who follows the "dictates" with humility.
