168}, publisher {London :Printed for Samuel Harding,}, author {Blackwell, Elizabeth, and Harding, Samuel, and John Nourse. Elizabeth Blackwell's A Curious Herbal is notable both for its beautiful illustrations of medicinal plants and for the unusual circumstances of its creation. Engraved On Folio Copper Plates,. A herbal contains illustrations and descriptions of plants, their medicinal preparations, and the ailments for which they are used. The first herbal was written by the Greek physician Dioscorides in the first century AD.

Engraved throughout, 500 hand-colored engraved plates . Bound in at end of vol. 2, before the Index leaves, is 1) a folding engraved plate (315 x 400 mm. plus margins) of a "Peruvian Bark Tree" by J. Mynde after Johannes Hawkeens' drawing of 1739, published 1741, printed in reverse and handcolored, with extensive manuscript caption (possibly in the hand of Josiah Messer); and 2) an original watercolor drawing. ONE OF THE EARLIEST ENGLISH BOTANICAL BOOKS WITH HAND-COLORED PLATES and one of the first to be published in parts.

After finishing the drawings Elizabeth engraved them on copper herself, and coloured the 500 prints individually by hand. Arader Galleries has specialized in the field of color plate books and early works on paper for over thirty years. Initially published in weekly parts, the first volume, which contained commendations from the Royal College of Physicians, was completed in 1737, the second in 1738 or early 1739. Elizabeth Blackwell was the artist, engraver and colorist of "A Curious Herbal". List this Seller's Books. The necessity for providing for her family (her husband from debtor's prison); her proximity to the Chelsea Physic Garden, and her observation that a definitive herbal was needed, brought her to produce this book at a time when herbals were rare. From a production point of view, she unusually painted, engraved, and hand colored her own prints. Payment Methods accepted by seller.

I purchased two of these books based on the comment that they were great for research. Unfortunately, these books are copies from micro-fiche printings, and the pages are almost entirely illegible. Some of the plates of pictures can be read, but the text of the book cannot for the most part be read, which means the references of plant names, how they were used, and descriptions are not legible or understandable. It is hard enough for most modern readers to read and understand these types of books when looking at clear older typesets; but this copy of a copy is impossible. Cannot be used for primary or secondary references for any works. Returned both books and will look elsewhere for a copy that can be read, or is update of this work. Shame, really, as some of the plates are beautiful in and of themselves as drawings.

The book would be awesome if it were legible. I would think with all the technology we have it wouldn't look like an old school printing job. I would not buy this book until they have made a better attempt at copying the original.

Pages with the print very hard to see.
