Eleanor remembers the forceful Dutchman, Fulk van Hensum, from her childhood, recalling how much she had disliked him, but when he returns to her life--still dictatorial and overbearing--she finds herself strangely attracted to him. Reissue.

Fulk first met Eleanor when he was sixteen and she almost five. When they met again at thirty-six and twenty-five she still found him to be as horrid as he was back then. That he was engaged to someone called Imogen was of no consequence to her. Fulk liked Eleanor, but hwas the only child of a scholarly father and a mother who passed away early in his life. He much enjoyed being a part of Eleanor's family and their solid and warm lifestyle. However, Fulk had no wish to be parented. He found somethings about her, her mothering and her need to question everything he said, to be tiresome.
Fulk was a famous medical consultant. Eleanor was an outstanding ward Sister at a hospital in Edinburgh. She was highly respected by administration, staff and her patients. Being the eldest of five children spread out over eighteen years, Eleanor was naturally a controlling, bossy, know it all. She was in constant mother-mode with all those she gathered around and considered her chicks, even her parents. She was much loved by her friends and family because of this quality. Unbeknownst to anyone was that secret part of her that wanted to have someone strong to rely on too. Soon after going through a hair raising rescue attempt of her youngest brother, she realized Fulk was that someone. Thank goodness Fulk recognizes that he and Eleanor are soul mates and breaks his engagement to the cold and grasping Imogen. There is a lesson here from the author regarding being a helpmate to a spouse versus parenting one.
I have been buying Betty Neels books for my mother (in her 70's) at her request, as an introduction to using a Kindle. I can say without hesitation that she loves all of these books. As she has said, "The plots may all be somewhat similar and the stories quaint, but I enjoy them immensely and find them endearing." What better recommendation could there be? She now has almost every Betty Neels book available for the Kindle. (And the Kindle Paperwhite? She loves the backlight and the ability to make the font larger.)
Gold Crown
A lovely, if predictable story. The only thing missing from this story is the lovely descriptions of Holland that are the trademark of my favorite Betty Neels book. While the book is still set in Holland, the author doesn't spend as much time on the description of the country. Still a wonderful read for fans of the author.
Quaint, old fashioned romance I wish I still had paper version, glad it's now in reprint. Betty Neels is great.
All of Mrs. Neels' books are alike in their heroes and heroines which makes for easy reading. It is not worth the money to purchase them, but I have read many of them from the library to pass the time waiting in doctor;s offices.
This is a Betty Neels book. If you read Betty Neels, then you want the plot and everything else to be predictable. That is the point. Satisfying in that Betty Neels way. Only 4 stars because it is not "great literature" after all (and not intended to be).
Great love story.
Good old fashioned romance, good manners, loved it!! Reminds me of my younger days ( a sixty six) romantic. Great
