I feel a little awkward writing a review for a book that I didn't even finish, but I couldn't get past about page forty. The story was entertaining enough (although some elements will seem awfully familiar to anyone who reads magical fiction), but the quality of the writing is amateurish at best. There are so many books available by writers of professional caliber that there's little point in reading something by someone who regularly bungles her grammar, or doesn't know the difference between "illegible" and "unintelligible."

I'm about 30% through the book and I like it so far. This would be a good book for young readers. It's an easy read and simple to comprehend. The book had quite a few word errors and I noticed an inconsistency in the dragons' names. The names of places are indeed cliche` but I don't find it that big of a deal especially if this book is meant for a younger audience. Good read so far!

Update: I finished the book and I absolutely loved it! Sometimes stories are annoyingly predictable but not this one! Please tell me there will be a part 2!

Update 2: I enjoyed this book in its Kindle version. I am disappointed to see that the series is no longer available through Kindle. This story was nice but I would not spend $17 for one book.

I enjoyed the twists and turns the novel takes. It constantly asks questions, setting your expectations and then challenging them. In doing so, it pulls you through the narrative. While older readers are likely to guess many of the reveals, there are enough elements in play to keep things interesting -- in fact, at times it can feel a touch convoluted, but ultimately the resolution is both interesting and satisfying.

As a fan of dragon novels, I have conflicting opinions here. I do like the world -- it is intriguing, with interesting locales and backstory. However, I was disappointed that for a book with dragons in the title, it felt that they were pretty much background characters. There are a couple brief scenes where one plays a prominent role, but only for a few pages. The main character feels passionate about the dragons cause, but it is not entirely clear why as she has relatively few interactions with any. I am hopeful that for the sequel, the dragon introduced later in the book will become a primary character.

Ultimately, a good read, and I will be looking forward to future work from this author.

First let's start off with the good. It has a nice pace. Harvey's style of writing is easy to read. The world of she created is somewhat inventive and interesting. Finally, some of her characters did hold some of my interest for a little while. Mainly the two dragon riders.

Let's get down to the down and dirty. Why I couldn't finish the book. The heroine was shallow and insipid. She had a mystical cat who was her guide to another world and on to the start of her adventures. The cat's name was "Mystic". That just made me cringe. There were other cliched and hackneyed elements to the story that I found unbearable that I won't reiterate.

I will say that Harvey has a lot of potential for such a young writer. She's only 21 years old. I think with a little life experience under her belt she could be a fine writer.

Overall I enjoyed the book. The first part of the book sets up the characters. The second part makes you want to keep reading to find out if you were right. I thought she was very descriptive. I was able to visualize the scenery and the dragons. I am looking forward to the next book to see where she takes the characters.

The misspellings and obvious grammar errors bothered me. They would have been easily caught with more accurate proofing. It's almost as though they were more concerned with the storyline (perhaps cleaning it up since there were several inconsistencies). It was a little predictable; but, as one of the other reviewers stated, it was fun to read to see if I was right.

Regardless of the errors, however, the story itself was quite interesting. I would have put the book down if the story was not captivating enough to make me wonder how the author intends to bring the characters to resolution. For this reason, I gave the book 4 stars instead of 3.
