The inspiration for the Mortal Path series came from the occupation of Baghdad by American troops in 2003. There was a brief period during which the Iraqi National Museum was left unguarded, resulting in vandalism and looting of items of worldwide renown. Iraq sits on the ancient land of Mesopotamia, home to the cradle of civilization that developed in Sumer. I read these books as much for Maliha and company's adventures as I do the world Dakota has developed. We take a slight detour from one the overarching plots in the series, but that was perfectly OK.

Maliha Crayne, a woman who had made an agreement with a demon, became Ageless. After over 350 years she became aware that she no longer was willing to be an assassin for the demon. Malaya has become human with added abilities, such as super speed, faster healing, amazing strength. At this stage in the books she has pulled out the stops to help her friends and heal and valence her soul. This book is so full of action, and details it jumps off the pages at you. It's a great story. I want a few more books on the mortal path.

"Deliverance: Mortal Path Book Three" is, as advertised, the third entry in the continuing adventures of Maliha Crayne, ex-immortal slave-assasin of an ancient Sumerian demon, now gone rogue in an attempt to set to rights all the terrible things she had done at the bidding of said demon. This demon rescued her from a burning stake after she was falsely accused of witchcraft some 300 years ago, granting her immortality and superpowers in exchange for her promise of obedience. Although no longer immortal and all-but-indestructible (except by losing her head), Maliha is still possessed of superhuman strength, speed, reflexes and endurance, all of which are slowly fading away as she ages in small spurts due to the action of the chief Sumerian god, Anu, as she travels around the world trying to save rather than take lives to balance the scales literally carved into her abdomen by Anu. This usually involves killing off some baddies that results in a net saving of lives, causing a rebalancing of the scales that is accompanied by significant pain and a variable amount of aging. If she can balance the scales before she dies, she is free, else becomes the slave of Anu forever.

In this third outing, one of her entourage, Yanmeng, a venerable Chinese man well along the path to total enlightenment (he can astral travel and communicate with Maliha no matter where she is) is kidnapped and the kidnapper holds him for ransom in return for Maliha's performing assassinations on demand. The kidnapper turns out to be another one of the ageless immortals beholden to a different Sumerian demon, who also happens to be an historical figure well known to fans of sanguinary history, and the main plot revolves around figuring out how to save Yanmeng and destroy the kidnapper.

This time around the body count is still very high, but the bed hopping is toned down considerably, in part because the whole story takes place over a few week's time, and in part because Maliha is just too dam busy kicking' ass and trying to save Yanmeng. All of the (still living) characters from the last novel are here and all play various important roles. Not all are still living by the end. There are one or two unexpected twists and turns, and we are introduced to someone who will probably join the team for the next outing.

I love this series. It's fast paced, fun, vicarious wish fulfillment for anyone who ever wanted to be a superhero with lots of money and excitement. There is an overarching theme of redemption and revenge as Maliha circles the globe searching for pieces to a lens that in combination with an ancient tablet will allow her to destroy all the Sumerian demons once and for all. She seems to acquire one of these pieces or so on each outing, which means that there will probably be at least 3 or 4 more books in the series. At least I hope so.

Recommended (note that one should read them starting with the first, in order, for maximum enjoyment).

Don't get me wrong, I think this was a good installment in the series. However, it felt a lot more like a light murder mystery with a bit of a supernatural touch than either of the previous books did. While the book ended with some new characters introduced and others no longer in the picture, I'm not sure that much ground was covered in the overall scheme of things. Ultimately, I wanted more development of the larger story and this book very definitely focused on the smaller details and a much more compressed timeframe. Not that this is a bad thing; it helps flesh out relationships between characters and leads us further down the path, albeit with smaller steps than before.

Aside from the new villain, I felt that the supernatural elements of the story were largely pushed to the background while the characters dealt with the immediate problems facing them in this installment. There is a lot of action, and the story is interesting in a mystery-novel sort of way. I look forward to the next installment and hope Maliha makes more progress recovering shards and understanding more about what is going on in the grand scheme of things.

Maliha Crayne is been on The Mortal Path, seeking redemption for centuries of slavery to the Sumerian demon Rabishu as his personal assassin. If she can save as many lives as she has taken before she dies, she is free. If not... she will be brutally tortured for eternity. She has gathered a small group of trusted individuals she has saved, who have dedicated their lives to helping her find a way to defeat the demons forever. However, one person she's not entirely sure about is her lover, the Immortal Jake, who is still slave to his demon.

Now Maliha has a new problem. Her friends are vanishing without a trace. She doesn't even know where to start to find them, until someone, another Immortal, starts leaving her little surprises to find. This mystery person has a plan, bring Maliha under her thumb to use Maliha and her remaining supernatural abilities for her skill as an assassin. If this woman gets her way, the Immortals will be in a position to rule the country, and maybe the world, to create their own hell on earth. Maliha must make a choice, cave in to the demands of the Immortal and save her friends, while risking her own soul to forever torment, or refuse and watch her friends die. In Maliha's life, there is no black or white, good or evil, only the gray line in between, if she ever hopes to find Deliverance for her friends... and herself.

I just have to say I love love LOVE The Mortal Path series! Each successive book gets better and better. Be forewarned, Deliverance is probably the darkest book yet in the series. Maliha has her own strict moral code, however shady it may be, that wavers from time to time, but never falls. When those she cares about are in danger, it's watch out world, Maliha will do whatever it takes to protect them as best she can.

Our villain in this book is one of the cruelest, deadliest, most evil, but oh so captivating characters I have ever come across. This woman is black to the core, and wait until you find out who she is! I suspected early on who this monster was, but still when her identity is revealed I shuddered at the nature of this woman, at the same time I thrilled that I was correct.

The mythology Dakota Banks has invented for this series is absolutely fascinating. I read these books as much for Maliha and company's adventures as I do the world Dakota has developed. We take a slight detour from one the overarching plots in the series, but that was perfectly OK. There is just so much going on here, with page after page of action, that I didn't really miss seeing much advancement in that one story line. Deliverance is a thrill ride that will keep you turning the pages long into the night, and when you reach the end, you will be eager for the next installment. Also... you gotta love those cars of Maliha's!

Dakota, keep to The Mortal Path, and I will keep buying!

Tried really hard to love this series but it never burrowed into my heart. While the heroine is kickass she just did not make me like or root for her.
