Return of the Ancients is the first of a planned trilogy set in a post-human Earth of the far future. High School student Arn Singer is thrust into this future world through a rift in space-time created as the result of a prank played on him at an experimental particle accelerator that his class visits on school trip (Yes, I know that sounds pretty lame but trust me, it gets better from there).

It’s Arrived Harper watched the test with bated breath. mobile camera was modelled on deep-sea technology, except its housing didn’t need to be armour-plated against water pressure, so strength and durability could be traded off for mobility and speed. Harper almost applauded as the machine remained suspended about six feet from the ground.

Return of the Ancients book. Greig Beck's Valkeryn chronicles mixes a bit of credible Sci Fi with a fantasy story and on the whole it works. The first book in the series is entertaining thanks to Beck's writing style which keeps things moving along at a good pace. Jul 13, 2015 James Chastain rated it it was amazing.

Arnold Singer is just like any other fifteen-year-old boy growing up in the suburbs - average height, average looks. The love of his life thinks he's a geek ... that is if she notices him at all. Pretty normal, and pretty boring, really. But this normal life is about to change forever. On a school science trip to watch the test firing of a new particle accelerator, Arn is caught up in an accident that propels him into an extraordinary new world. In this new land, Arn is the last human alive. It is populated with mysterious and bloodthirsty creatures, some of whom want him dead, while others see him as their only hope for survival. Can Arn survive in a hostile world and save his new friends? Or has he arrived in time to witness the fall of a mighty empire? An epic tale of love, betrayal and war in a world both familiar and terrifying.

"Return of the Ancients:The Valkeryn Chronicles 1" is the latest by Aussie author Greig Beck, who has attracted a considerable following with his Alex Hunter "Arcadian" series, currently at 3 novels and counting.

The world of the future is mostly unrecognizable, and is dominated by centuries-old war between the Wolfen, large, intelligent lupine bipeds with Norse names and religious beliefs, and the Panterrans, harder to visualize and describe, but very smelly, evil and possibly descended from felines. Arn finds himself allied with the Wolfen, gets up close and personal with the Wolfen King's daughter, and searches for clues to what has happened to the human race. There are interludes back in the 20th century, that in combination with the title would suggest that we will be seeing some mixing of of the past and future in forthcoming books.

All of this is rather different from Beck's other, very successful military sci-fi/horror series, in that this one seems to be aimed squarely at the Young Adult market. The protagonist is a nerdy teen named Arnold, the language is squeaky clean, there is no sex and the violence and bloodshed is tame by comparison to the military mayhem in the Alex Hunter novels. Nothing wrong with YA fiction, and many adults, including this reviewer, enjoy YA fiction occasionally. However, I think the publishers (or author) might have indicated the target audience for this interesting series.

I'll be around for the second entry, whenever that comes out.

Recommended.

Clever
A different style for Greig Beck, moving across from the Alex Hunter and Matt Kearns books, it took a little while to get into this one. However, once I got past this initial change of mindset, I got to the point very quickly after that where I couldn't put it down and am smacking my chops looking for the chance to read the next one

I throughly enjoyed this and read it in one afternoon!
Eagerly awaiting next adventure in this series!! Neat tie in if you've read the Alex Hunter novels....

Excellent. A combination of present (computers, teenagers, and possible wormholes), past or future, one teenager just trying to get back to his time whether it be past or present or future. A mix of teen romance, a different land full of creatures and the very distinct possibility that the teen is the last of man-kind.

I was unsure of this story because some the the people said it was for young adults and even as I read the first chapters I question it but did get involved with the story and enjoyed it and have ordered the Dark Land book to see what happened since it is a continuation. It will have you rooting for the good guys.

I became a fan of this author a few years ago when I read his first two books (which I really liked). I was actually looking for the next book in the series when I saw that he was starting to write a new series. I was pretty excited about the description of the book and was looking forward to getting it. When I finally got it and started to read it, I was having a little bit of trouble getting into it but the further (or is it farther?) I got into the book I was really getting into it and when things started becoming clearer as to what the story was about I had to laugh. At that point I was in hook line and sinker! By the time I was done reading I couldn't wait for the next book!

I don't like to say much about the contents of a book because I don't want to spoil any surprises for anyone who does decide to read it. All I will say (without giving anything away) is that this book is set in our future a conflict that goes on every day in the present is escalated exponentially in the future. When you get to the point where you would figure that out you will probably get a laugh out of it like I did! (at least I hope that you do ;-).

Happy reading!
Excellent book. As others have noted, this series could fall more into the Young Adult genre due to the lack of vulgar language or sexual situations but there is plenty of action and violence to keep older readers engaged. The character development is strong with the main characters, yet slightly lacking with some of the ancillary ones, but not to the point that it hurts the story line. Overall, a good read and an intriguing series. Those that are fond of Greig's other works will definitely enjoy this one. I look forward to see where this goes...
