International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) is the most acclaimed climatic model of the ionosphere. Since 2009, the range of the IRI model has been extended to the GPS orbital height of 20,000 km in the plasmasphere

International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) is the most acclaimed climatic model of the ionosphere. Since 2009, the range of the IRI model has been extended to the GPS orbital height of 20,000 km in the plasmasphere. The new model, which is called IRI-Plas, can input not only the ionosonde foF2 and hmF2, but also the GPS-TEC.

The COSPAR International Reference Atmosphere (CIRA) is an empirical model of the atmosphere of Earth. It consists of a set of tables of average air pressures, altitudes and temperatures. CIRA is prepared by an International Working Group jointly sponsored by COSPAR and URSI (Union of Radio Science). The Working Group has met regularly at the biennial COSPAR Scientific Assemblies between 2002 (Houston, USA) and 2012 (Mysore, India). It contains updated versions of empirical models that have been developed further by means of the very considerable advances in direct measurements by appropriate space-based instrumentation of the 1980s, 1990s and early-mid 2000s.
