Backster's "Primary Perception" theory was a subject of the Discovery Channel television show MythBusters. After all human and environmental stimuli that could alter the results were removed, they reproduced Backster's experiments with the dracaena plant, yoghurt, saliva and eggs. After getting negative results, they performed a final experiment using an EEG instrument, which is more sensitive than a polygraph, connected it to a plant to check whether it would "see" eggs being catapulted randomly into boiling water. Biocommunication with Plants, Living Foods, and Human Cells. the reactions of plants, living foods, and animal cells to human thoughts

Primary Perception: Biocommunication with Plants, Living Foods, and Human Cells. Book Summary by Susan Joseph. This discovery set Mr. Backster upon a lifetime pursuit of conducting experiments to detect the reactions of plants, living foods, and animal cells to human thoughts. His efforts to publicize his findings have, quite frequently, elicited strong negative reaction from the scientific community and the public. Having studied primary perception in plants, eggs, and bacteria, Mr. Backster moved on to studying primary perception in animal and human cells.

Biocommunication, also called Primary perception or plant perception, is the belief that plants can experience emotions. Backster was known for his controversial experiments with biocommunication in plant and animal cells using a polygraph-machine in the 1960s which led to his theory of primary perception. The Plants respond - An Interview With Cleve Backster. In July 1997 The Sun published an article called: The Plants Respond - an interview with Cleve Backster. The first part of the article talks about Backsters first discovery of plants respond (biocommunication)

We have established the existence of physical phenomena unique for the living brain so-called psychogenic field, which reflects the expressed psychic state of human brain. The subjective state of a human being was shown to affect remotely the physicochemical properties of the blood.

American Association of Police Polygraphist obituary for Cleve Backster.

Backster, a leading expert in the use of the polygraph, first noticed such biocommunication in experiments with plants that were hooked up to a polygraph machine.

Even the tiniest living organisms such as bacteria can demonstrate reactions to their environments in a kind of "primary perception" that comes before the five basic senses, he said. Backster, a leading expert in the use of the polygraph, first noticed such biocommunication in experiments with plants that were hooked up to a polygraph machine.

This is the only book by Cleve Backster himself, describing 36 years of research in biocommunication, observed electrical responses in plant life and other living organisms. All life forms have the capability of responding to one another, from plants and bacteria to foods and animal cells. Most amazing is his work with human leukocytes. These discoveries have opened up a new paradigm in science, ecology and healing.

An excellent read -- Primary Perception is written in a simple, candid, informative manner that I found very refreshing. As I progressed through the book, I began to feel as though the author, Cleve Backster, was reading to me from his diary and lab notes; I think this can only be explained by the honest manner in which the book was written.

Backster's work is often referred to in the 'alternative thinking' arena (Robert Anton Wilson's 'Cosmic Trigger Vol.1'; David Wilcock's 'The Source Field Investigations') and is sometimes seen has a revolutionary breakthrough. In summary, Backster began experimenting with plants using polygraphs and EEGs and discovered scientific data supporting the idea that plants have physical responses to human actions, thoughts, and emotions. His data (recorded very methodically & meticulously) indicates these responses were not bound by the electromagnetic spectrum, but traversed rather some other kind of field, some kind of primary perception that is beyond the typical five senses (hence the title).

I received the overwhelming impression that Backster wrote this book simply to record his findings before he passed on; I did not detect any kind of agenda-advancement this is sometimes found in this realm of literature.

Truly an excellent & informative read -- I can honestly say that this book has enhanced my view of life on both the material and the immaterial planes.

This is truly breakthrough work in my view, and based on my personal experience with plants I have no doubt that they have consciousness and awareness. I say this because we have some house plants that are over 20 years old and they are still thriving. Why? Well, perhaps part of it is that we actually talk to them and acknowledge them on a regular basis. This work is truly fascinating in my view, and its premise just makes sense to me. I highly recommend it.

Sadly this book cost me a small fortune to buy, but it was well worth the investment. Backster's work described in an article in my local newspaper was what originally got me involved in this research back in the summer of 1971. I finally figured out what was going on, and it will revolutionize all of physics and biology. Another good book that describes his work is EXPLORING INNER AND OUTER SPACE by the late Brian O'Leary, PhD. It starts out with the work of Cleve Backster and covers a wide range of other phenomena including UFOs, the face on Mars, ESP, and much more. Polygraph expert Cleve Backster was bored one night in 1966 so he hooked up his lie detector to a plant and began to think about what he could do to cause the plant to experience stress. It occurred to him to burn the plant. When he thought of it, the polygraph went wild. Even though Backster had not moved from his seat, the plant sensed his thought and reacted. This book tells the story of what happened that night and for the next 40 years as Backster continued to research at how plants and even your own cells in your body react to your thoughts. It is a fascinating and important book, complete with polygraph tracings and pictures of his experiments.

Knowing that Backtster’s research was viewed as controversial, I approached this book with an open mind. I enjoyed learning about his exploration into consciousness and communication between living cells. The implications of his findings are eye opening and far reaching and if accurate aid in bridging the gap between spiritual philosophy and science. The thoughts expressed in this book expanded my perception of consciousness and for that I am grateful.

Highly recommended. After reading this book, you will have a new positive outlook on the things around you. Interesting read.

Great historic reference if working on entangled systems.
I'm not much for reviews. I'll just say that while Mr. Backster's writing style is very dry and borders on boring, the content is amazing.

The dry writing style only goes to show that this is a pragmatic man who stumbled across something amazing and had the open mindedness to pursue it.

I HIGHLY recommend it.
