Big Tracks, Little Tracks: Following Animal Prints (Out Science, Stage 1). Millicent E Selsam. Plenty of Fish (I Can Read). This book has singlehandedly sparked my little 3-year-old's interest in "finding clues" outdoors about what's going on in the world. A sure fire way to get his attention is to say, "Hey, I found a clue!" It's definitely for small kids-relatively few words per page, and the points made are pretty simple. But this doesn't mean it's simplistic. It's quite an achievement to effectively introduce the whole notion of "the mysteries to be solved in nature" to small children.

The Out Science Books series, originally published by Crowell, now HarperCollins, is an American children's book series designed to educate preschoolers and young elementary school students about basic science concepts. Many Let's Read and Find Out titles have either been reillustrated (sometimes more than once) or reissued under different titles. Some of these titles may be duplicates because of the renaming.

Bought this for my niece's 5th birthday along with Roylco Animal Tracks Rubbing Plates. She's in kindergarten and this book is just above her reading level which is great, she can use it to practice. We live in Texas and this book covers many prints that you could easily find hiking or camping or even walking in a park. It also covers unique characteristics about each print that can help determine what type of animal left it. Ex: canine prints have claw marks, feline prints don't; bunnies put their hind legs in front of their front legs so you can determine which direction it went; certain animals step in their tracks etc. Note for teachers, this book is inquiry/discovery based. Lots of good open ended questions for the kids to think about. We read this book and then started coloring with the rubbing plates. My niece was quick to point out the difference between the "dog and cat" prints based on the claw marks so she at least got that from the book! It's a lovely book, gets the kids thinking with great questions and pairs great with the rubbing plates!

All of the "Let's Read and Find Out" science book are a big hit in our house. This one is no different, and a welcome addition to our home school library. I particularly like the experiments towards the end of the book and the simple explanations that make it easy for kids to understand - both my 2 year old and 6 year old learned new things from this book.

Perfect for my granddaughter to learn animal tracks.

would have liked to seems more wild animal tracks which is what we were looking for ,,, was more domestic animals track learning instead ,, but still a cute book

Big Tracks, Little Tracks is a good book for introducing preschoolers and kindergarteners to widlife observation. The writing is engaging and the art has a nice warmth to it.

I gave Big Tracks, Little Tracks four stars instead of five because it prominently featured domestic animals, namely dogs and cats. I don't have anything against dogs and cats, but I felt that including them, especially early in the book, could leave some younger kids with the impression that dogs and cats are wildlife. At the very least, their inclusion strikes a dissonant chord as the main focus of the book is on wild animals.

Beyond that small drawback, it's a great little book for young children.

The book itself appears to be a nice one for children to learn about animal tracks, but the book arrived without the pages cut apart, so that reading it is impossible.
Got this for my 7 year old daughter before we went on a trip to Yellowstone. She loved the pictures and turned out to be pretty darned good a spotting and identifying many of the tracks from it. Great little book...was her favorite of several that I got for us.
