Marital separation occurs when spouses in a marriage stop living together without getting divorced.

Marital separation occurs when spouses in a marriage stop living together without getting divorced. Married couples may separate as an initial step in the divorce process or to gain perspective on the marriage and determine if a divorce is warranted. Other couples may separate as an alternative to divorce for economic or religious reasons, for tax purposes, or to ensure continuing retirement and/or health insurance benefits for both spouses.

A compelling account of the personal experiences of those whose marriages have ended. Dr. Weiss brings a new understanding of the specific stresses and difficulties of the separated. He makes concrete, practical, and unmistakably humane suggestions designed to ease the transition and to aid in the reorganization of the life of the newly separated. The emotional and social challenges that one might expect to encounter are fully described and coupled with ”strategies for recovery”: how to tell one's children, relatives, and friends; what to expect of (and ask) a lawyer; and what to look for in forming new relationships.

Researching whatever I may be facing is one of my usual coping strategies. To me, this book offered a personally timely perspective of common, often painful, but survivable human experience(s). Robert Weiss's section on pages 78-81, titled "Obsessive Review," names and describes a process.that offered me a profound acknowledgement of what I was feeling & identified potential exit strategies to my own endless "looping."
I've offered a copy to many other people, ever since. Several have wondered how we could come to be laughing about some of our common threads! (Another book I often offer in tandem with this one is How to Survive the Loss of a Love, by Peter McWilliams, which many recipients have both lavishly appreciated at their time of need, and have requested for others in similar upheaval. I've found it personally helpful more than once.)

This book was published in 1975. But do not let that turn you away. What a surprise! The human heart remains the same today as then. The depth of insight and explanation of the nature of attachment and the death of "love" is profound. This book was recommended to me by a Separation & Divorce support group.
The book is filled with firsthand comments from those experiencing the sep and div process. So very compassionate because it does not shy away from showing the profound ambivalence of human connections. God bless you, Robert Weiss!

As a psychotherapist I have recommended this book for over 15 years. I only wish it were updated to acknowledge gay, lesbian and trans relationships. This is a excellent resource and I think one of the best books by far.

Antiquated. Nothing earth shattering. I m not sure when this was written but it seemed very outdated.
