This is a story kids, teens and adults can enjoy. Target audience is kids/teens but it came recommended to me by a successful Marine Biologist who found their career saving sharks after reading this book as a kid. The author should be proud. The story follows a diver at an aquarium as they decide to open a shark exhibit. Sevengill sharks are part of it and he is fascinated and feels a connection - the reader learns as he learns.

Sevengill did not scare Don Reed Until the terifying day he felt her teeth. Then he realized his mistake.

Don Reed, a diver at Marine World, reconstructs the birth and early life of the shark known as Sevengill, describes his experiences with her, and recounts other underwater adventures.

If you like sharks or have any interest in them, order this book used and read it now! It's out of print, but I hope the author puts it back into print.

Mr. Reed does a wonderful job of showing the true nature of sharks- often shy, gentle creatures but still wild animals.

I really enjoyed this book! Get it, read it, pass it along.

My kids love this book, they are ages 9,7,& 4. This book has led us on a search for Sevengill sharks, for which we are slowly finding more info on. This book is written so the end of each chapter makes my kids begging "for just one more"! LOL
If your kids or if any adults, have any interest in sharks and want to read something other than a boring documentary, get this book, it is filled with cool info and written quite well.
Enjoy!

Exciting yet down to earth story. First chapter from the baby shark's point of view.Rest of book, one learns quite a bit about what it's like to work in an aquarium.

As a diver at Marine World/Africa USA it was part of Don Reed's job to swim with sharks. He fed them and cleaned their tank. At first he was afraid when he felt a scratchy stomach brush past him or saw an approaching pair of jaws. Soon, however, he grew used to the sharks. He was even comfortable with them, admiring their strength and agility. He especially cared for Sevengill, a massive brown shark with black spots and golden eyes.
Sevengill did not scare Don Reed. He began to trust her...Until the terifying day he felt her teeth. Then he realized his mistake. A shark can never be someone's pet.

Read this book numerous times ( and used it for several book reports) when I was in elementary school and that was almost 30 years ago.

I'm a lawyer and author and I've read hundreds if not thousands of books. For some reason, this is the only book that actually gave me chills of excitement in parts. Perhaps it's because I know the events in it really happened. Perhaps it's because the book is so well written; the author recedes and you find yourself alone in the water with the sharks....
I really enjoyed this book. I've read it several times. It's true, which makes it even more exciting. I learned that if I ever swim with sharks, I should make sure that if my torn wetsuit has a red lining, I shouldn't let it flap around in the water!
