Mter the nonscientific public has mastered physics with Feynman, it can take on chemistry with Harry Gray, Caltech's Beckman Professor of Chernis-. try and director of the Beckman Insti-tute, and his two coauthors from UC San Diego. Harry Gray, John Simon and William Trogler have written a book that, at first glance, appears to break the mould. Braving the Elements threads its way through chemistry plucking out examples of its applications, such as radioisotopes in medical imaging and chemotherapy and the development of antibiotics from a compound found in dogfish stomachs of all places. Weaving their way through every diverse topic encompassed by chemical science, they tell us how artemisinin, extracted from an ancient Chinese remedy for fever, is now being used as an antimalarial compound.
