The Encyclopedia of Earth System Science is the first encyclopedia to comprehensively cover, in one place, all the earth sciences—including atmospheric science, biogeochemistry, climatology, ecology, geology, geophysics, glaciology, hydrology, meteorology, mineralogy, oceanography, petrology, and numerous other fields. It treats the Earth as a system of interactive processes and describes how these processes affect and are affected by each other. Complete in four volumes, the Encyclopedia provides a broad base of knowledge.

Earth System science (ESS) is the application of systems science to the Earth. In particular, it considers interactions and 'feedbacks', through material and energy fluxes, between the Earth's sub-systems' cycles, processes and, hydrosphere, cryosphere, geosphere, pedosphere, lithosphere, biosphere, and even the magnetosphere-as well as the impact of human societies on these components.

In addition to 700 cross-referenced entries, Kusky (natural sciences, St. Louis . presents 19 essays, interspersed throughout the text which discuss topics such as the formation of Earth and the solar system, life on Mars, coping with the sea level rise in coastal cities, and earthquake warning systems. Entries are arranged alphabetically and range in length from 100 to 2,500 words. They cover concepts, theories and hypotheses, places, events, the major periods of geological time, history, technology, organizations, and people who have made significant contributions to the field.
