Calculus, Combined, Student Resource Manual. A really great book for anyone who wants to learn calculus on their own; and the best book for classroom calculus courses as well.

Calculus, Combined, Student Resource Manual. If the professor sucks (mathematicians shouldn't be allowed to teach mathematics because they're too in love with theory, proofs, and the history of mathematics, like anyone cares), you'll still be able to master calculus, and apply it in your chosen field.

Calculus Late Transcendentals Combined Paperback – 28 August 2007. by Howard Anton (Author). I have 34 years of teaching experience, but this is my first year teaching calculus. I bought this book hoping for something more readable for my students. I found what I wanted and then some. After comparing several sections, I now have this book on the desk next to the one I was given to teach from. My current text gives one paragraph to rectilinear motion and left the students confused. Anton has three sections that spiral with the material under consideration and does an excellent job.

The new Sixth Edition of Anton's Calculus is a contemporary text that incorporates the best features of calculus reform, yet preserves the main structure of an established, traditional calculus text. This book is intended for those who want to move slowly into the reform movement. The new edition retains its accessible writing style and a high standard of mathematical precision.

I've used George Simmons Calculus with Analytic Geometry 2nd edition, the Stewart series, and the text by Thomas' and Finney. On the whole, I say this is better than all of them, and they're all excellent. It's very intuitive and readable. There are a few topics that could be better or more detailed, but these are minor quibbles. The complete solutions manual (and the text itself) is floating around out there on the torrent sites as with stewart's and thomas. In order to deeply learn this subject it helps to have different texts and the resources on the internet, but if I could only have one text for elementary calculus, this would be it.

Very Happy with this book, this is the book text for my daughter at he AP calculus class in High School

I bought this book when I could no longer follow the confusing textbook we were using in my 6 week College Calc class that I took in 2000. This textbook was much easier to understand and helped me earn an A.

The book is easy to read and understand. I'm reviewing calculus after many years of being away from it and find this book to be helpful.

This is the best calculus book for the 99% of us who could care less about proofs and other tripe. This is for people who prefer applied mathematics, i.e engineers, scientists, social scientists, rather than spending 90% of your time doing stuff you'll never, ever use again. Anton focuses on real-world problems, and lots of them from many fields. His explanations of examples are thorough and complete, rather than skipping key steps and leaving you floundering. A really great book for anyone who wants to learn calculus on their own; and the best book for classroom calculus courses as well. If the professor sucks (mathematicians shouldn't be allowed to teach mathematics because they're too in love with theory, proofs, and the history of mathematics, like anyone cares), you'll still be able to master calculus, and apply it in your chosen field. You will also be able to move up the mathematics food chain, and take on higher mathematics with confidence in your mastery of calculus. How do I know all of this you ask? I took calculus once, and though I did well on the tests, I never really understood calculus. So I took it again (all 3 classes) with this Anton book, and found I finally understood it. I went on get my degrees in engineering, and taught Calculus For Engineers And Scientists for years using the Anton Calculus book, and never lost a student. I just taught the applied version of calculus, and skipped all of the dross. The students loved it. My classes were always flooded, and the classes taught by mathematicians were so unpopular, that the head of the mathematics department used to chew on me regularly for 'stealing' the students out of their classes. Boo-Hoo! They refused to teach calculus my way, but said my classes were 'inadequate.' He ignored the fact that his department flunked 50-80% of the calculus students in the classes taught by his bunch. Nobody flunked my calculus classes. Go figure! Anyway, Anton rules - don't go second best when learning calculus. Calculus should be fun and easy, not torturous and byzantine. (FYI, when I retired, the mathematics department breathed a huge sigh of relief, and went happily back to flunking their students).

received the wrong book ,a novel.

Anton's Calculus textbook is the best I have ran across. It is a fantastic text, most of the proofs are worked out and for the most part easy to follow. His writing style is clear and extensive in which he avoids being dense which is a common pitfall in many math textbooks.. (Especially Calculus.) The problems are generally the right difficulty, and the examples are generally very good. He spends a lot of time concentrating on concepts over computational techniques. Paraphrasing, I completely agree with his preface in which its more important to understand the concepts. . . because every problem in the book has been computationally solved, understanding the concepts is the most important thing. This is especially true of the at times esoteric and difficult subject of vector calculus at the end of the text. Anton also integrates (no pun intended) the use of CAS and graphing calculators in his text.
The down side to the book is probably its price. It is a very expensive book!
As good as this book is, Calculus is a hard subject matter. the textbook alone is not enough. Supplement it with a great teacher and a lot of hard work and one should learn calculus very well.
